Mara Elliott gets Morgan Dene Oliver money
Well, maybe. But those posts won't be filled by "a panel of professionals" at all. The panel that will fill those posts would be the city clowncil, which continues to hit new lows every month or so. At least the voters get to choose which corrupt candidate they want in those jobs, and not let the corrupt clowns of the council select them.— August 10, 2019 6:12 p.m.
Shelley Winters holds her breath
The Poseidon Adventure wasn't a bad piece of lightweight entertainment; you just had to suspend disbelief for a while and go with the flow. What that did to the cruise-ship industry for a time isn't clear, but I'll bet that many folks decided to skip the cruise and stay on shore. It was a true piece of work.— August 10, 2019 9:48 a.m.
Gavin Newsom carries water for billionaire benefactor
We have 85 year-old Jake still buying favor with politicians from either party. Why, at this point in his life, is he meddling in politics? He and his sons are out of Qualcomm, and must need something to do with all their free time. It is well known that his plan for remodeling Balboa Park can be resurrected, even though there is little support for it locally. But if he wants to leave something behind, he could easily do a J. Paul Getty sort of thing with world-class museums that offer free admission, or something similar. He's already had the Jacobs family name tacked onto many local institutions and places, not the least of which is the UCSD engineering program. How about going back to doing philanthropic things that make life better here in San Diego? Just keep in mind that was and is Qualcomm that brings in legions of H-1B foreign workers while fully-qualified Americans are un- and under-employed locally. The irony of that occurs when those US citizens are graduates of "his" engineering school at UCSD.— August 10, 2019 9:41 a.m.
Oceanside Cemetery vs. Breeze Luxury Townhouses
That corner is in a hot spot. Fifty years ago, the traffic load to/from the freeway was miniscule compared to now, and it wasn't hard to access or exit from either the gas station or restaurant. Now it can be a challenge waiting for a break in traffic. I read about the "conversion" of the property from neglected cemetery to commercial use a long time ago. If the bike shop is now closed, I'd guess the restaurant will soon follow. That restaurant was part of an attempt by Foodmaker, Inc, now known as Jack-in-the-Box, to diversify. They went in for theme sit-down eateries, and the most prevalent one was the Hungry Hunter, although there had been others that I cannot recall. There might have been as many as a half dozen of them spread around the county, and I think this one is the last to survive in something like its original concept. That concept was for a very rustic building that looked to be a century old, heavily weathered and dark inside. In short, a 19th century hunting lodge. That concept was big in the late 60's and early 70's, but the public grew tired of the dark surroundings, low light, and overall funk. So, most such operations closed and/or converted to something more inviting, light and welcoming. My last visit to the Hunter wasn't the greatest. Service was inattentive and rushed, and the dinner just didn't come off like they used to. The place needs a big renovation, showing its age and fifty years of hard use. Come to think of it, the owners may just be holding on, waiting for an offer they can't refuse to walk away.— July 26, 2019 1:36 p.m.
San Diego Unified paid $400k for claim against Lincoln High coach
So, Neufeld-Fernandez, what can be done to require "accountability?" How about having a DA who actually cares about this sort of abuse? If she did, this would have been thoroughly investigated, and charges would have been filed. But she doesn't care at all. There was this case of sexual misconduct in a civil lawsuit filed against Kevin Beiser, a member of that district's board. We have yet to hear of any criminal charges being lodged, even though his employer (another local school district) has placed him on leave and is "investigating" him. It's all up to the DA, and she's doing nothing, just as her predecessor did in so many cases of abuse and corruption.— July 23, 2019 7:39 p.m.
San Diego border agents face fentanyl death risk

The curve of death at El Mirador
This is just another case of crappy Mexican highway construction, and lead-footed drivers who have little regard for themselves or for others. Any of the drivers who have traveled that stretch of highway should know better. So, the question is if they care about what happens. The highway authority could fix the bad parts of the highway, and put some ominous signs on the rest, but they don't. Why? It's all about money, and the perpetual excuse in Baja and the other states is that the don' have the dinero, and that's the end of it.— July 23, 2019 7:12 p.m.
San Diego border agents face fentanyl death risk
monaghan, do you mean to express confidence in what Bersin says? His record in many endeavors is poor, and his tenure as Border Czard produce little in the way of control. Personally, I have serious doubt in anything he says or otherwise expresses, and I think he should be ignored and allowed to fade away in obscurity.— July 23, 2019 7:06 p.m.
Oceanside awards for pot-growing questioned
Here Oceanside goes again! Corruption, insider deals, and pay-to-play abound. So what's new? Well, the stakes for these licenses could be huge. Or maybe not. It's not clear just how lucrative cannabis can be. With all the competition from Mexico and from No Cal, it might not be that good a deal. Oh, and the newcomer Chris Rodriguez is on the recipient list from this grower complex. He seems to have mastered, early on, the skill of raking in dough from those he is supposed to evaluate and govern. Now, ol' Jerry Kern isn't looking so bad, is he? It's all what you compare and when you compare it. Sigh.— July 9, 2019 7:23 p.m.
Gas tax bump sends 15 San Diego stations above $4.30/gallon
You mean that you aren't already stocked up on ammo with a twenty year supply? The stuff doesn't spoil, you know.— July 5, 2019 4:46 p.m.
