Trail cancellation shocks mountain biking association
So, the departure of one bureaucrat in the Forest Service, and this whole thing goes on hold indefinitely. Until every piece of the puzzle is in place, there ain't gonna be a trail. No wonder it takes so long to get anything done around here. We are told that federal agencies do everything by the book and that the personalities don't make any difference. Yet that is just what happened here. A well-designed and mapped trail in that area would be an asset. Too many of the national forest trails were developed (if you can call it that) prior to mountain bikes. And now many suffer from the effects of bikes. Steep or very rocky stretches of trail cause erosion from the tires slipping either on the way up or on the way down. Take out the steep stuff and you now have a trail that serves both the bikes and the hikers. If I were a mountain bike rider, I'm not, I'd be ready to just give up. Next thing you know, unofficial and poorly designed trails will begin to appear in that area, made by frustrated riders.— September 7, 2019 12:29 p.m.
As I Lay Dying dropped from Resurrection Fest
So As I Lay Dying is still around? After their dear leader Timbo (and his hideous tats) was sent up for attempted murder of his wife, they still think they have some sort of (Christian) credibility, and can book gatherings such as this Fest. I'd have thought that the other members of the band (and I use the term loosely) would have changed their names and their message and have slunk off into obscurity. But this is the land of rock bands of all kinds, and ya' nevah know. Gimmicks like Christian hard-rock bands are everywhere, and yet they appear to survive and prosper.— September 5, 2019 7:51 p.m.
Vanessa Valiente: the cure for Costco couture
This is a very notable piece in that it never uses the word "fashion" once. Some years ago that word seemed to replace the terms "style" or "stylish" while rendering them obsolete. Will someone tell me what has transpired since then?— September 5, 2019 5:45 p.m.
Realtors hand off cash to Faulconer cause
"Pay to play" is alive and well, actually thriving, in SD. I don't know if the Reader deliberately chose the head shot of Seidler to be unflattering or if that's just how he appears all the time. I refer to his unkempt hair, salt-and-pepper goatee and 'stache, and bus casual attire. He might be an upstanding sort of guy, but in that shot he comes across as unsavory and not someone you would want to have over to your house.— September 4, 2019 8:11 p.m.
A 1949 Hudson Brougham named Christine
Interesting story and interesting car. I think the car driven by Jack Nicholson in his sequel to Chinatown, which was entitled "Two Jakes" and set about 1950, was a Hudson of about that same vintage. But his was a convertible, a symbol of his prosperity. Having a woman pull this off is most unusual. Maybe there's more to the story than reported here?— September 4, 2019 8:02 p.m.
More drama at San Diego Junior Theatre
If even ten percent of the offenses alleged in this story are true, the city has a major scandal on its hands. I've been skeptical of this new city attorney; she could be a big and positive change from her predecessor, or just another hack. To date I've seen little to inspire confidence, and she's far from any sort of reformer. What I do find hard to deal with is the fact that upstanding citizens are willing to take the "gloves off" and publicly confront her about these claims. (I also wonder about the news-gathering capabilities of our local, daily rag. Has anyone seen a thing in its shrunken pages about this in months or years?) I can only advise those who claim to be aggrieved that if they expect anything at all from this current attorney general that they need to be very, very patient. His only mission today seems to be suing the Trump administration every few days over some new outrage, as he and the rest of the Dem power block in Sacramento, see it. Everyday business in the state? Fuhgedabouddit!— September 4, 2019 6:49 p.m.
Oceanside cop overtime puts city on the line
I am too, although we disagree often.— September 4, 2019 5:58 p.m.
Oceanside cop overtime puts city on the line

Tales of a dead fixer and Gina Champion-Cain
Champion-Cane has been described elsewhere as well-known around town. That shows how out-of-touch I am with the locals who move and shake, especially outside No County. I knew nothing about her, or her businesses or her "investment" firm, and had not heard her name before. A new Nancy Hoover? Maybe, but she at least had her boyfriend to blame for actually stealing the funds. But then I'd forgotten, if I'd ever known, about Mitrovich being involved in the J David fraud and scandals. These interlocking webs of deceit can get to be too much to remember, let alone bear.— September 1, 2019 12:18 p.m.
North Park storefronts take on Faulconer and Ward
For years we have heard exhortations from politicians and assorted do-gooders to bike to work. But the infrastructure to do that wasn't there in too many cases. (Think of trying to bike along Friars Road.) Bike lanes can aid those who can and are willing to bike to work--or to shop or to seek entertainment or recreation. But too many folks don't care to ride bicycles, or cannot use them. Can a young parent load two or three small children onto a bike to take them to school? No, cars are still part of the equation and will stay that way for the foreseeable future, and where there are cars there is a need for parking. There's gotta be a better way to assist the bike riders than robbing those older 'hoods of their on-street parking spaces. In fact there now should be an effort to increase the number of such spaces rather than reduce them.— August 30, 2019 8:40 a.m.
