Casablanca Returns to Big Screens for 70th Anniversary
That’s quite a clip, Scott. I watched it. And I laughed. Call it a guilty pleasure. Why guilty? Because what The Stooges do is so violent and inane it really shouldn’t be funny. For a time in my life, it wasn’t. When my kids were young, I was so concerned about their safety that, like many parents, I found The Stooges’ antics worrisome. Didn’t want my little kids trying anything like that at home. Now that my children are older, I’m free to appreciate The Stooges as practitioners of absurdist, inane, and over-the-top humor. Had The Stooges been involved in “Casablanca,” it certainly would have been a different film.— March 16, 2012 2:38 p.m.
What Happened? Clive Owen
You asked a good question and provided an excellent answer. Clive Owen was so memorable in films like "Croupier," "Gosford Park," and "Closer" that it seemed reasonable to expect many more such performances. I still hope that will happen. I'm not giving up on Clive.— February 21, 2012 4:45 p.m.
Unconditional Surrender Could Get the Kiss Off, But Hope Springs Eternal
Looking at the photo of you and the Bob Hope statue, it's hard to tell whether you are kissing its feet or being ill. Which is it?— February 17, 2012 1:21 p.m.
Tony Bennett: Legalize Drugs, Save a Rock Star's Life
I nearly had a thrombo laughing at the over-the-top YouTube excerpt from "The Oscar," one of the most sublimely terrible movies ever made. If only Criterion would release a letterboxed edition with lots of extras. It would be cinematic bliss for "Oscar" connoisseurs or, rather, connoisewers.— February 13, 2012 2:42 p.m.
Leonardo Live Slated for San Diego Movie Screens
Thank you, kind sir, for your comment. Let us be grateful that both Leonardos are thriving onscreen -- da Vinci in "Leonardo Live" and DiCaprio in the upcoming "Titanic 3D."— February 10, 2012 2:31 p.m.
Review: Faust at the Met's Live in HD
Hope you get to the opera, nan. You don't even need to dress fancy. Sequins are optional!— January 7, 2012 12:34 p.m.
Review: Faust at the Met's Live in HD
I bet many people feel the way you do, nan. They would go to San Diego Opera -- or other opera companies -- if tickets didn't cost so much. Opera is a gloriously complex art form that's labor intensive and expensive to produce, thus the steep ticket prices. (Ticket revenue, by the way, doesn't cover all the expenses.) My suggestion? Check out San Diego Opera's website and see if there's a single ticket or a subscription package that you can afford. Even if you sit way up in the balcony, the sound is good. Just bring along binoculars so you can easily see what's happening on the stage.— January 7, 2012 11:59 a.m.
Review: Faust at the Met's Live in HD
Props to you, blueprl, for your comment. "Faust" is an opera that doesn't get enough respect. It's too often considered a creaky old classic with a few outstanding arias. So Des McAnuff deserves credit. He has directed an "atomic Faust" which is, despite its flaws, both fascinating and thought provoking.— January 7, 2012 11:25 a.m.
Calling All Tots: Crybaby Matinees Want You!
You're welcome, Scott. It was pretty painless. Not much crying at the "Crybaby Matinee" I attended. And it was great to see moms enjoying a film. Just wish something like "Crybaby Matinees" had existed when my kids were tiny tykes.— November 28, 2011 11:45 a.m.
Interview: Russ Peck, Symphony's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Organist
Yes, the organ music for the YouTube video sounds generic, as if it doesn't have much of anything to do with specific characters or events in the film. Russ Peck's accompaniment is just the opposite, as I was happy to learn when I interviewed him.— October 24, 2011 8:52 p.m.
