Downton Abbey vs. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel: A Tale of Two Actresses
What will happen when Shirley MacLaine joins the "Downton" cast? Imagine the possibilities! Shirley's character could arrange a seance. (Sounds like something she'd do in real life.) Or the script could call for Shirley and Maggie Smith to get into fight, slap each other silly, and roll around on the heirloom rugs. That would certainly boost ratings, wouldn't it?— May 15, 2012 12:03 p.m.
Blue Like Jazz Interview: Director Steve Taylor
This is a fine interview. "Blue Like Jazz" is one of those rare films that explores the meaning of spirituality and faith in an imaginative and non-dogmatic way. It's good to get insights into the director, the film, and the book that inspired them.— April 13, 2012 2:52 p.m.
If I Cast the The 3 Stooges
A sequel to the new "Stooges" movie is inevitable, given these casting suggestions!— April 9, 2012 1:47 p.m.
Why the (Bleep) Am I Watching Jackass?
Hey Scott. You want me to write about The 3 Stooges, too? Must another of my guilty pleasures be revealed? Isn't it enough that I confessed to being a fan of Jackass?— April 9, 2012 1:15 p.m.
Secrets of a San Diego mailman
After reading this diary of a mail carrier, I have fresh appreciation for the folks who make sure I receive all those letters, ads, and bills. Congrats, Ryan, on your first-class delivery of a fine story.— March 29, 2012 4:16 p.m.
The Title or Trailer Game IV: Catch It!
Thanks, Scott, for praising my "Casablanca" trivia quiz. Sounds like you're getting fired up for the Big Screen's one-year anniversary party. Gonna give us more hints about the trivia contest?— March 20, 2012 5:10 p.m.
Casablanca Returns to Big Screens for 70th Anniversary
I'm with you, Nan. I think it's great that TCM champions old movies. If "Casablanca" does well at movie theaters on March 21, there will be even more incentive to present anniversary tributes.— March 18, 2012 3:30 p.m.
Casablanca Returns to Big Screens for 70th Anniversary
I confess! For the last question in my trivia quiz, I threw in a reference to The Three Stooges as one of the possible answers. It was a joke. Scott Marks, that tireless Big Screen blogger, is such a huge fan of The Stooges that I knew he'd want to make a comment or two (or more). Scott also has a peculiar fascination with Bob Hope. That's why one of the answers to question No. 3 is Toluca Lake, which is where Bob used to live. It was such a goofy answer that I couldn't resist including it.— March 18, 2012 3:22 p.m.
Casablanca Returns to Big Screens for 70th Anniversary
Thank you, Colonna, for your casting suggestions. They are most unusual. After watching both of the clips you recommended, I heartily commend your imaginative choices. Singer/actress Dee Green is truly a comic coloratura nightmare. And that was some gown that Muriel "Tiny" Landers was wearing. Wonder how it would have looked on Sydney Greenstreet!— March 16, 2012 6:04 p.m.
Casablanca Returns to Big Screens for 70th Anniversary
The very thought of loud-mouthed Martha Raye as the female lead is terrifying, David. But let's not stop there. Maybe there should have been a musical version of “Casablanca” starring Ethel Merman. That's even worse, isn't it?— March 16, 2012 3:22 p.m.
