I stand corrected. It showed up when I "refreshed." That's the first time I can remember having to do that, but it worked. But, "never mind" . . .— October 13, 2015 11:40 a.m.

What pisses me off is that Obama didn't extradite those (Watch your mouth! The word "a-----e" is not allowed here.) a$$holes to the World Court. Mass-murder? What else would you call it? [Note: Got hit by the Reader's word police; had to make a silly amendment, as if kids and other offendeds couldn't crack the code. If we can't have Carlin, do we have "free" speech?]— October 13, 2015 11:34 a.m.

I don't know. All I know is that he was interviewed on television immediately after the quake and made statements that I paraphrased. A review of the footage should identify the man. I thought that a HUGE story was in the works, but heard nothing more, that's all. Maybe I didn't check page 36 of his hometown throwaway rag. However, it is clear that CalTrans took the matter seriously after the quake, since juicy retrofit contracts were let once everybody figured out that money could be made. This is how politicians and other high-level lackeys get brownie-points for "economizing." Like editors who clip pieces to fit another ad in--you'd better write every sentence and paragraph so the story is complete no matter where the cutoff takes place, eh? Right here in Riverless City, the sewer line in Harbor Drive had to be replaced after the City Manager deleted the acid-protection coating without which it was a virtual certainty that the asbestos-cement pipe would be eaten away at the juncture of the flow and the air in the pipe. It was, and some contractor made a killing. That's how you "provide jobs" and pay off your contributors at the same time--same with street "maintenance" and everything else. Grab a sucker by the toe 'till he hollers, then make him pay, every day, until he hollers to be screwed BIG TIME!. This was from the utilities engineering planner who got silenced. There are a lot of ways to silence people. Since I had no family with which to threaten me, and didn't have to have the job (they would know I would throw a fit at Civil Service and sue) they threatened me subtly at first, then directly when that didn't work. But my work was not big enough to warrant an actual hit, I guess. If I remember correctly, (first name slips away) Silverman, one of the best lawyers in SD, might have been involved. His archives might be revealing if you could get access. Aguirre should be aware of some juicy stuff. Tw— October 13, 2015 10:58 a.m.

I will charge the SOB with assault. Better yet, lock the bastard in a closed room with his own goddamn smoke. Your freedom to intentionally swing your fist ends where I said it does, and I WILL counter the assault with ALL force necessary to neutralize you. Freedom, my a$$!— October 13, 2015 10:33 a.m.
Gov. Brown vetoes bills to reform utilities commission
Nobody ever said democracy was easy. Anything worth doing tends to be in opposition to the power structure. As Ben Franklin responded to a voice in the crowd after the signing that said, "Gentlement, what have you given us?" --"Liberty, IF you can KEEP it!"— October 13, 2015 12:23 a.m.

I'm talkin' 'bout CRIMINAL negligence and/or overt acts. Failing in one's professional duty is a close second. Interfering with a public professional in carrying out of said professional's duty to the public is another. CalTrans overrode an engineer's urging that encircling steel rebar be wound around the verticals in the construction of "freeway" bridges BEFORE the Loma Prieta quake. He mentioned it once publicly, then was never heard from again. Some retrofitting was done AFTER Loma Prieta, including the pillars that hold up I-905 over the San Diego River floodplain, but even then there was contractor malfeasance with respect to the welds. (This is a tip.) Tw— October 13, 2015 12:18 a.m.

I want a Constitutional Amendment that says "Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of any individual unless that freedom abridges the freedom of others." In other words, your freedom to swing your fist stops at, or in threatening proximity to, my jaw or person or other innocent party. Tw— October 13, 2015 12:09 a.m.

Yeah, I have to say that I share some of jr's concerns. It's a helluva price to pay, however, when lives of real gentlemen like Gwyn and Seau, who make such good role models for young men and boys, are cut short by stupidity. But what concerns me most is the kind of political correctness that stifles discussion on ALL of the merits and problems with issues of public concern. I find myself frequently at odds with both extremes, particularly when they start something and suck one into a conversation, then pull out when they don't get their way. I continue to believe, despite ample evidence to the contrary, that mature individuals have a responsibility to carry on honest debate to a conclusion. There is just too much hot air and not enough sincerity and an unwillingness ever to be wrong, and mature enough to admit it. It seems that the old saw, "I've been wrong only once, and that was one time when I thought I was wrong. Maybe Fred Williams will weigh in on this one?— October 12, 2015 5:18 p.m.
