Water wars: View from the delta
Speaking as a retired consultant, "studies" are a way for leeches to siphon off our water-money.— August 6, 2015 10:06 a.m.
Water wars: View from the delta
I'm with Bill on this one Don. Shutting off beach showers is a true drop in the bucket. But worse, it is window-dressing political bull$hit designed to avoid addressing the REAL priorities.— August 6, 2015 10:03 a.m.
Water wars: View from the delta
Another one knocked out of the park! Yes, it will be difficult, but since when have we backed away from a challenge because it was difficult? (Maybe you'd better not answer that!)— August 6, 2015 10 a.m.
Water wars: View from the delta
Again, another central point that simply sums up a reality that we persist in ignoring. It isn't complexity, it's how we complicate the simple facts by trying to make silk purses out of sow's ears. We raise cattle, for example, in some of the most unsuitable places, largely because of our narcissistic faith in our superiority, ignoring the self-evident lessons of evolution--a continuous process of best-fit experiments. Visduh has hit the nail squarely--rice belongs in, say Louisiana; cattle belong in the Great Central Plains, not in the Great Basin or anyplace else west of the Rockies. All organisms, from slime worms to elephants to whales, live where the conditions are best suited for them. Period. Not complex.— August 6, 2015 9:57 a.m.
Lucchino to leave Red Sox in shakeup
One of the high points of my life was visiting the Urquell brewery in Pilsen, where I had a helluva good time with the braumeister, a real nice guy. I can't even come close to the quality, even the imported stuff. Now when this outfit starts brewing here, it will be the end of ze vorld. I remember that when we met up with friends at a Prague restaurant I drank so much beer, I could hear it sloshing in my stomach every step I took down the hill.— August 5, 2015 2:03 p.m.
Lucchino to leave Red Sox in shakeup
Why, Don! Don' tell me you didn' wanna be a HERO! My time in the military permitted me to understand great art--like the movie "Lonely Are the Brave," which summed up many of the "heroes" I served with in the scene of the in-lieu-tenant in the helicopter! (This is a "must-see" film.) I should have been a consultant for the movie, "Dr. Strangelove," which was released smack-dab in the middle of my career--it was a mild interpretation of the real thing, but did capture the spirit of it. I worked in the Security Service and SAC Intelligence (in the war-planning room deep in the earth) in the "Penetrations Branch" planning B-52 nuclear strikes. I can't tell you any more because . . .— August 5, 2015 10:12 a.m.
Lucchino to leave Red Sox in shakeup
I meant to say a' course. Another misteak. I must be schlepping.— August 5, 2015 9:51 a.m.
Murder charged at American Addiction Centers
So sorry to hear that. Words are inadequate to express sorrow. Dog (perhaps they spell their name backwards?) sorrow is more expressive than human sorrow sometimes. I have learned much from other species, and finally research is nibbling at the edges of the principles which drive our species too. I feel the deepest sorrow for those who love the abused or deceased ones. None of us can last forever, but some of us (present company not excepted) try to fill every minute with sixty seconds run. It's ok to smell the roses, though. Copy the last two letters of love, spell it backwards, and add the copied last two letters to the end--evolve. A mere coincidence with no meaning, of course, so don't tell the History Channel! They'll attribute it to Nostradamus or some alien who landed in Peru.— August 4, 2015 9:52 p.m.
Edison didn't provide blackout emails to regulator
Evidence is evidence, and can't honestly be evaded. Oh yeah, I lie all the time. Mostly to girls, though. I figured you had sense enough to know, based on the evidence, that I make a singular exception in your case. I got reminded that as good as I thought I was, I wasn't good enough in this case. I'll never be good enough, and certainly not as good as some contributors who are absolutely perfeckt. "I've only been wrong once, and that was one time when I thought I was wrong." The truth is that I'm baaaad! As to intelligence, my answer to most questions has to be "I don't know." When it comes to belief, I find it impossible to believe and think at the same time. As I have said before, all my beliefs are provisional. So see to it that you never screw up. Best, Twister "You are entitled to your own opinion, but you are not entitled to your own facts." (Moynihan, Baruch, or Schelsinger, depending upon whether you're Irish, Jewish, or German, I reckon. Plagiarism is rife, as is independent invention.)— August 4, 2015 9:03 p.m.
Edison didn't provide blackout emails to regulator
I must confess that I was gullible enough to fall for the "careless or incompetent employee" dodge too. This should be a "heads up" for me at least, to believe nothing I read on the Internet, read in the papers, or hear, and to question what I actually see with mine own eyes. Everything must be scrutinized with the utmost skepticism. Best, Twister— August 4, 2015 6:53 p.m.
