Budweiser Zero renews sponsorship in wake of late-season collapse
So said 'Manny Machado' the satirist.— October 11, 2021 8:10 p.m.
Portion of Fiesta Island to serve as Colony for the Unvaccinated
There are those who appreciate satire, those who don't get it and a third category. Those who know darn well it's satire and they know who is writing this column. I think they're sending him a message. His other column turns controversial and sometimes toxic for no reason. It's sad, keeping in mind what he's writing about should be enjoyable.— October 9, 2021 4:39 p.m.
Union-Tribune begs advertisers to use its Spanish edition
Lorena Gonzalez would make a horrible governor, regardless of political leaning. She carries herself like Trump and people like that aren't fit for office. I'm embarrassed for anyone who votes for someone who carries themselves so poorly. You can be strong and effective without being abusive.— October 8, 2021 9:49 a.m.
Love fest for Oklahoma's Stephanie Bice and Sara Jacobs in San Diego
She's a politician. She's trying to "break the partisan ice." Of course she's going to stay in a very "modest" hotel. If you're trying to break the ice politically, you're not going to fly in from Oklahoma and spend all your time in Rancho Santa Fe, La Jolla and Coronado. She's thinking like a politician because she is one.— October 5, 2021 10:10 a.m.
Gentle Vista man shoots abusive wife in back of head
You never know about juries is correct. They're human. I can't explain because I'm not a lawyer, and I've been a juror once. But I do know that there is a stereotype, and perhaps an unfair one. If a woman kills her husband, it's because she's being abused. If a man kills his wife, it's because he's an abusive man. Due to the difference between physical strength of men compared to women, and the fact that men are much more likely to abuse a woman, men will always get the short end of the stick. Men get the short end of the stick in court regardless of the crime. It's not the way it should be, it's just the way it is.— October 1, 2021 4:47 p.m.
Gentle Vista man shoots abusive wife in back of head
"The solution to an unhappy marriage is a divorce." This is true. Both of them had been married before. With children. If you can leave a marriage with children, you can leave a childless marriage. Society does have more sympathy for an abused woman than an abused man, and rightfully so. Men are physically stronger - usually. This was a large man and a large woman. Come on. His 911 call is all about him. "Hi, I have a problem." That's something you say to customer service when you order online, and they sent the wrong product. Not when you shoot and kill your wife. "I will never be able to sleep in my own bed again." Once again, all about him. Where's the compassion for his wife that he just shot and killed? Or her son who is left without a mom? First degree murder. That might sound harsh to some. I didn't hear the evidence, but the jury obviously thought it was premeditated murder. He grabbed some cash to give to her son, grabbed his gun and shot her in the back of the head. Hmm. This is a very sad story.— September 30, 2021 1:17 p.m.
Urban adventuring in Oakland
Between the two of us we should be on the lookout for a "loss of revenue" bill from Oakland. The author will receive a $500 gift card.— September 28, 2021 9:58 p.m.
Urban adventuring in Oakland
Sure, I'll comment. Having spent half my life in the Bay Area, and half my life in Southern CA, I know Oakland very well. Oakland is a somewhat downtrodden, crime-ridden city, and if anything it's gotten worse - just like San Francisco. I wouldn't go as far as saying it's best avoided. There's a lot to see and do, and there are nice areas. During business hours, you'll be fine. At night, be careful. Oakland is a very walkable city. I've walked from 12th St. BART station to Jack London Square. And Lake Merritt is in a nice area, and always enjoyable. A lot of good restaurants, and night life. You just have to be careful at night. And even in the hood (Oakland Coliseum, Oakland Airport, etc.) you'll be fine if you're aware of your surroundings. OPD is everywhere. I wouldn't live in Oakland, even in the nice areas (Oakland hills, Rockridge, etc.) The crime rate is too high. My friends who live there are happy. This article is written in a very positive manner, and that's nice. She obviously really enjoyed Oakland -- and that's a good thing when you're travelling. In general, I LOVE the Bay Area!— September 27, 2021 7:43 p.m.
Lawsuit threat did not scare off Jensen recallers
Resigning is the honorable thing to do. That takes humility, and politicians aren't the most humble people. Pit bulls and gated communities aside, city council members shouldn't be wall to wall flakes. Oceanside deserves better. Otherwise, how do they get anything done?— September 12, 2021 5:49 p.m.
Four-year sentence for attempted rape of Carlsbad woman
Four years is a very light sentence for attempted rape of an elderly woman.— August 30, 2021 11:56 a.m.
