Where a University of San Diego degree leads
Door-to-door PACs and developmentally disabled "clients," the jobs I did WHILE slugging it through school. ;) Thanks for the memories, Adam. But shouldn't you have gotten at least a few modest teaching jobs with an M.A.?— January 20, 2010 8:44 p.m.
Best of 2000: Best TJ Dentist
refried, do you know if this is true? Also, what's the deal with these old "Most Emailed?" "Most Emailed," yet zero online comments?...— January 20, 2010 6:35 p.m.
One happy pup at Tamarack Beach in Carlsbad
SurfPup, is that you? ;)— January 20, 2010 6:27 p.m.
We, the Little People
"Tell you what, SD-You can be the queen and I'll be your body guard. We can slay those awful racist dragons in the name of a better more boring world. Sound fun? You betcha! It's a date. I'll pick you up in my Mad Max chariot. :-D" Were you by any chance watching the Matrix on AMC, then? It's a nice analogy, except that I'm alone in the cockpit, and you, sir, are the unfortunate dragon... "Why, oh why, didn't I take the BLUE pill!?"— January 20, 2010 6:24 p.m.
None
C'mon, Pete. It's not exactly rocket science, and you're not exactly giving Jane a chance ;)— January 20, 2010 6:15 p.m.
The Last Sunny Day For A While
You know ladies, he is NOT that old, and furthermore, he's kinda cute. But taken, so don't get any ideas ;)— January 20, 2010 3:42 p.m.
CCDC and other disappointments
How was Hexagone, auntie? Haven't eaten there yet, but am hoping their provencale French cuisine is good. If you tried any fish soup or a bouillabaise, let us know. Walked by there last night during the blackouts, and the diners were happy, relaxing in the usual candlelight that the rest of us were scurrying to procure at home. I watched the staff whisper discreetly at the door and gesticulate helplessly outside--possibly about faulty generators? Anyway, all's well that ends well, and the blackout didn't last long ;) About downtown and noise pollution, in auntie's defense: San Diego doesn't know how to be a big, noisy city, and the buildings are not fitted for the kind of growth we've experienced over the last ten years or so. We used to live at the Church lofts over on Tenth at B'way, and being on the second floor didn't help smother the street noises, a constant sharp stream of homeless expletive and the 24 hour baptist services next door, which included frequent programs of heavy bass, choir, and speaking in tongues. We couldn't take it, and the church wasn't going to tone it down, or even close their windows, inches from ours where our brick walls faced theirs. We simply had to move. When San Diego works out the kinks, hopefully condos and apartments and residence hotels will be fitted with thick airport glass where necessary, to muffle the noise, but in the meantime, you may have to make the same choice...— January 20, 2010 1:29 a.m.

The Last Sunny Day For A While
So this Friday then? We will have to take your word on it, I guess, refried. I hope that for the sake of Rocio, the kids, and your friends, you do whatever the doctor wants--except consume unnecessary antibiotics, which, apparently you people take far too many of down south ;) So I'm glad this doctor is to your liking. Though I am obviously a fan, am loving this blog in particular; your usual structuring is well-served by the punctuation of episodes of rain, and the breathtaking tale of convincing the doctors to let you take your wife and baby home before the flooding hit. Let us know how it goes, please.— January 20, 2010 1:10 a.m.
We, the Little People
I am being overharsh and remiss without addressing refried's last sentence in #19: refried, I have tried time and again to explain to Pete, rickeysays, and Josh, our unholy triad, about psychologically internalized racism, and to remind them of the inherent humanity that drives people to do what THEY would also do, given such a lot in life as to have to decide between feeding one's family and treating a loved one for a life-threatening medical condition, etc. etc. If you think you can do any better, by all means. I am grateful if you try.— January 20, 2010 12:36 a.m.
