Jackie Brown
I could not disagree more with your analysis, Talls. In fact, I think Jackie Brown is his most mature film, delving wonderfully the relationship between a man and woman in their forties, both supposedly beyond the unrealistic expectations of young "love," but yet full of the tragicomic, ironic insecurities of middle age, the kind that lead some to undress in the dark. Grier and Forster craft fully dimensional characters who wake up and make something a little more energetic of what remains of their days. Let your expectations of novels fade, and watch this one again for its own merits. This film is slower and more contemplative than anything else Tarantino has done, and shows he is capable of more than comic book narrative and stilted allegory with guns.— January 22, 2010 1:46 a.m.
Where a University of San Diego degree leads
re: #18: Well, Adam, I think it is only natural that people are going to ask you about the boy who wet the bed. Them's some serious allegations, indeed. You state several times that you get off/thrive on being criticized/lambasted online, which leads me to wonder if you are a troll. (Pete, can you tell if your new bud is a troll?) If you are serious about the offer to antigeekess, you'll have to start by spelling her name properly. After all, how do you expect to get that job editing her blog if you don't put your mad spelling skillz forward? Finally, to be a real badass, you will need to be a tad more entertaining. So far, it's been a lot of clache/cloche/cache--excuse me! (gotta cold) --CLICHES--whew! I mean, your story was ok, but not earth-shakingly anything. Face it--you need a tutor, and I know JUST the place for you: Welcome to Pete's Real World School of Online Badass Trolldom!— January 22, 2010 1:12 a.m.

re:#16: Ouch! The clash of your cloches clobbered my cachet, not to mention my cache of cash! re:#17: Pete, are you like the Walmart greeter, but for the "Real World?" Wasn't that like the first reality tv show? Were you on it or something? re: #18: OOOhhh, "antiGreekess!" Now, that's hot.— January 22, 2010 1:03 a.m.
Swimming
My tired and apathetic excuse for commentary: I think Stephen Dedalus would look like 'anyboy,' no matter what scene of that book. The four 'b's in the last line don't work. I think Carolyn Miller did workshops at UCSD or something. There used to be a poster for a reading she'd done, hanging up in the office where I worked there.— January 22, 2010 12:15 a.m.

Ain't gonna get protest from me. I liked the blogginess of this piece, and am always happy to hear about Tijuana--especially names of recommended writers/artists. Thank you Julio ;)— January 22, 2010 12:06 a.m.
a mediation on a Goddess and pic of the growth
Oh yeah--great poem indeed! It is very sensual without passing that line into sexual. Makes me feel like putting on my belly dancer outfit and taking a turn around the room! ;)— January 22, 2010 12:03 a.m.

re: #12: "...its a clache these days to find someone doing something for a living, that they have no qualifications or degree for." I have tried every way I can to pronounce it, but can't figure out what word "clache" is supposed to be... Should we get creative with it? ;)— January 21, 2010 11:58 p.m.

This has to do with a private message between nan and myself, so though I do not wish to discuss it publicly, I will say that I did not mean to give nan the impression that she had anything at all to apologize about.— January 21, 2010 11:13 p.m.
