Californication/True Blood/the Canada connection
...in other words, let the REAL Duchovny step forth. I have actually read his literary criticism, and it is good. I think you can actually google an essay of his on Robert Frost... He is witty and sharp, much more so than the dull blade that is this "Hank Moody." Maybe we should petition the producers--this show would be THE show for me, if only they took the chances that would make it great! ---and hells yeah, hired ME, too! It does make sense, since Duchovny and I have studied in the exact same department/fields... ;)— March 24, 2010 4:38 p.m.
Californication/True Blood/the Canada connection
"i love verbosely concentric tympani but will the public in general???" Again, I love NAN's way of expression--and will address this question below... re: nan's assessment of Californication: "the second seasons rock star depravity was underwhelming...the angst of being a satyr who couldn't keep his lip or his jeans zipped was hampered by no real balance of him as a writer...and the stealing of his book by a crafty 16 year old got ridiculous after a while" I didn't see all of this, just the start of that plot with the crafty 16-year old, but nan, you've hit the nail on the head about what's wrong with the overall project--one gets no sense of him as a writer. This means that he might as well be any old porn stud playacting "scenes," which is the cheesiest thing on the planet. What they need: Really pull his identity as a writer into it. His main motivation is to return to writing, and to write something authentic, so no more playacting "writer." Instead, have him write something a writer would, and have him say things a writer would say--allow him to be intelligent, but funny, so the general public who may not get multiple layers of meaning will at least get one very funny layer...— March 24, 2010 4:34 p.m.
Californication/True Blood/the Canada connection
That title, nan, I heard as a joke on the street, living in NYC, for about forever. It was also the title of a song by Red Hot Chili Peppers or somebody. I have a friend who has been writing for tv for about twenty years--Ms Grant's perspective is 100% right on, as are the comments of nan (which are 100% wittier than anything the writers of Californication ever came up with). It would be an awesome thing to break into screen writing for tv, Grant. I wrote a treatment for an episode based on a concept my friend was working into a series, but though he loved the writing, he wanted something different, and not an ensemble cast. Anyone looking at what I wrote up against what he came up with would say mine was the better treatment. C'est la vie. He was ultimately protective of his own status, and didn't want to let me in. It happens... "i once read that a 2 syllable word in Zulu that was commonly thought to mean "far away" really meant "the precise distance at which an infants cry could be barely heard" who woulda thunk the Zulu language was quite that elegant??" Why wouldn't it be elegant? When it comes down to it, no one language has anything on another for poetic elegance, which depends not upon linguistics so much as the human minds that created the poetry. "SD, do you really have to publish a book in order to obtain your PhD?" You don't have to publish your manuscript, but it must be book length, yes. Means you have to be able to conceive of a project of multiple chapters, yet with an overarching argument developed within those chapters. I know what you mean--it's the part of the program I've procrastinated for years on...— March 24, 2010 4:27 p.m.
Californication/True Blood/the Canada connection
I want to see Nurse Jackie too. If it is now avail. on Blockbuster online, I'm on it. As for Duchovny, didja know he has a Phd in comparative literature? Same exact field as me, though he gave it up for acting. Sexy AND creatively smart! --Except for this series Californication, which suffers from very bad writing. It could be great, and Duchovny and others try to make something of what they are given, but the writing is just another example of the corruption of Hollywood, looking to replace real work with something easier to produce and act--and pay for... If only they'd let Duchovny write the dialogue and plots, it would be much better, I'm sure. ;)— March 24, 2010 12:57 a.m.

nan, this is great! man, the knife's edge of hips--so many great images here. I love the idea of the body as a page upon which one writes a story (or a poem)--a record of one's life, but also a reminder of how we ourselves--our bodies and minds-- are like text... 'written' by all of our influences... I love everything but the last word--where something more physically grounded seems expected.— March 24, 2010 12:45 a.m.
