If you want streets repaired, it looks like you can forget it
If the money was falling from the sky, the Convention Center expansion would be worth a look at the plans. If the money from the Port Authority and designated taxes can't be spent on real needs, we can do worse. Spending public money on projects isn't bad if the public wants to pay for it, after basic needs are met. But attracting tourists with expensive projects while closing public restrooms for lack of money, literally stinks. Regardless of what happens, Filner has started an honest discussion of City priorities, and focused attention on our failing infrastructure. Some people would prefer to talk about something else.— July 21, 2013 10:33 a.m.

We should compare Filner to DeMaio, Sanders, and the Council. When the Council overrides his veto, he loses ability to influence outcomes. He needs to assemble a working majority, and that may require bargaining. The downtown interests are a force to be reckoned with, electing one man won't reverse decades of dominance in a few weeks. Bob Filner is the best we have right now, If there's someone better, don't keep it a secret.— July 20, 2013 6:23 p.m.

'Twas ever so. Every thinker has their own ideas, But we should note that the national Republican Party won't hide their bigotry, they march without thought in lockstep and that destroys them locally. I like the trend. Plenty of teams that brawl in the locker room win championships.— July 19, 2013 1:26 p.m.

From where I sit, the Convention Center plans lack the sheer insanity of the Crack Central Stadium proposal, the new building might be better than the old, rather than worse, and capacity will be expanded. I don't support the expansion, but honest people might; Anyone who thought last years election victory meant more than the beginning of a knock down battle didn't know this town. We've had a couple of bad weeks, some favorite leaders have disappointed us, but progressives are better off than we were last year. We haven't won, we're not winning, but we're fighting effectively now.— July 19, 2013 11:49 a.m.
Saldana says Filner's actions not illegal
I don't see how this media circus or the Mayor's resignation could help any alleged plaintiffs. If one plaintiff comes forward and claims that resignation is proper redress for their grievance, or charges are filed, I will reconsider, but until that time I will regard this as a shockingly bad piece of legal representation at best. Advice to counsel, win the case first, then propose punishment.— July 18, 2013 10:33 a.m.
Ignoring friends' advice got Filner into trouble
Deserved beatings don't get advertised. We should note that Filner is accused of first asking whether women are married or have boyfriends. Crude but lawyerly.— July 18, 2013 9:09 a.m.
Ignoring friends' advice got Filner into trouble
An endorsement by the UT seriously damages reputations for progressives. Formerly I double checked my ballot to be sure I didn't vote for anyone they endorsed.— July 17, 2013 5:17 p.m.

First person accusations deserve due process also. Should someone come forward and detail a crime at the risk of their careers, I would take that very seriously. Until they do. the obvious fact that Filner has enraged so many powerful and corrupt people makes me proud of my vote. If the UT hadn't demanded his resignation by now he would have disappointed me.— July 17, 2013 2:46 p.m.

What I don't need to hear is that San Diego deserves better. What a shocking pack of hypocrites live in this city. I suppose the gay man would have run a sex free office. Or that power is never passed from girlfriend to girlfriend in this city. Bob Filner is accused of very common behavior, behavior that should change, but so common everyone is quick to believe it happened. Let's wait for facts, and whatever those facts suggest, know that this City is composed of flawed people.— July 16, 2013 10:25 p.m.
It's a lynching until proven otherwise
What's the rush about? Filner offended his own team, one with plenty of women in key posts, if he resigns that team disappears and everyone will have to look for work. That will teach women to keep their mouths shut. Gay men will likely replace them. That will teach men to keep their mouths open. These attacks are so easy to make, salacious rumors abound in politics. So far nothing described is a crime. If someone is wronged let's consider whether resignation will help them, it might end their career.— July 16, 2013 6:55 p.m.
