Local hotel business will lag state through next year
Many thought thirsty tourists would drink in bars rather than on the beach, if reports are correct, they just went elsewhere. Police and City efforts to reduce unruly crowds have perhaps reduced crowds in general, and hurt the City in the pocketbook. We don't want to be Las Vegas, but we should provide outdoor places to smoke and drink reasonably. Our politics sometimes seem dominated by those waiting to quietly die, rather than those aiming to entertain tourists and make a living.— November 29, 2013 10:03 a.m.
Superrich NOT leaving California, says study
If low income taxes really attracted wealthy people. they would all leave for Mexico where there is no income tax.— November 28, 2013 1:04 p.m.
Local hotel business will lag state through next year
Word on the street is that restrictive drinking and smoking laws hurt our nightclub and tourism businesses in the beach areas. Many say that the beach drinking ban had an immediate noticeable negative effect. A consensus of bartenders and doormen doesn't make something true, but relaxing vice laws can improve tourism, take Las Vegas, so restrictions plausibly could hurt business.— November 28, 2013 12:58 p.m.
Braves to leave Turner Field after only 16 years
These schemes have little to with sports, Qualcomm remains a wonderful place to see football. We must keep an eyes on all the cards in this game of three card monte. The Chargers want to develop the present Stadium site with condos, and will condemn land around the new Stadium as well, I suspect condos there also. Construction companies also are in on the scheme, the just plain idiotic retractable roof proposal could only be for the purpose of driving up the price. There never was a football game played in bad weather in San Diego, unless sunstroke counts.— November 13, 2013 10:46 p.m.
Manchester buys more San Diego papers
Since the UT sells papers in all the areas mentioned, it's difficult to see the business sense in the move, perhaps Douglas Manchester doesn't understand that he can't buy advertising access to the demographic of those repulsed by Douglas Manchester. This perhaps is one more proof of Franklin's first law of economics: "A fool and his money are soon parted.".— November 4, 2013 3:44 p.m.
The money behind Recall Bob Filner committee
Michael Pallamary and Associates litigates, as per this statement from his site; "Pallamary & Associates specializes in land use litigation and the processing of complex land use permits, land planning, discretionary permits and coastal development permits issued by the City of San Diego and the California Coastal Commission.". Usually Law firms litigate, so that's the source of my inflated belief in Mr' Pallamary's qualifications. I apologize to lawyers, who don't need another black eye.— November 1, 2013 6:55 p.m.
The money behind Recall Bob Filner committee
You neglected to remind that the scheme was a punishment looking for the crime, started at the same time Filner took office, that Michael Pallamary, it's founder, is a lawyer devoted to jamming architectural atrocities past city zoning. Bob Filner's crime was standing up to Mr' Pallamary's developer backers. Pallamary mentions nothing else on the recall petition.— November 1, 2013 5:52 p.m.
SDSU baseball players come under fire for Halloween game costumes
This of course is intended as humor, but Al Jolson's use of blackface did happen. and puzzles us today. Before we condemn Jolson, who was bigger than Bieber, we should remember him as a civil rights pioneer, who integrated nightclubs with his posse, and Hollywood with his parties.— October 31, 2013 7:59 p.m.
San Diego mayoral debate abruptly canceled...due to pension truth?
Seems like truth telling disqualifies candidates for public office.— October 30, 2013 9:51 a.m.
UCSD conceals Fletcher's reason for graduating five years late
It's there, "LAUNDERING", Fletcher's "work" at UCSD and Qualcomm are laundered bribes for services rendered, and to be rendered. The obvious is now explicit. I'm ashamed of my University.— October 30, 2013 9:26 a.m.
