Obama denounces companies for off-shore inversion
Corporations depend on the honesty of top management. Years ago, when investors thought about this, unrestrained greed was not considered a qualification for leadership. Incredible as this may seem now, personal integrity was once considered important requirement for handling other peoples money. Devotion to ethics was so extreme that *CEOs stayed married to mothers of their children*!!! Quaint remnants of these practices, can be found in the tuxedoed shows of generosity now made in front of TV cameras, doubling as a chance to show off the trophy wife. Real ethics and a happy company lead immediately to a corporate raid of course, as we see in the Market Basket case.— August 13, 2014 4:53 p.m.
Death of a thousand cuts
When they raze an orange grove and put in housing, it saves water. I'm for managed growth and zoning, but not due to water issues.— August 4, 2014 10 p.m.
Death of a thousand cuts
Filner hadn't even been officially lynched yet when they fired most of his people, many of them the very women that were supposedly the victims of his depravity, though they endorse him to this day. The council now pays for Jan Goldsmith's defense of his use of private Email accounts for public purposes, and doesn't even question him for starting the payouts without notifying them officially. I have to wonder if the council conspired with Goldsmith by Email also, in violation of the law. Those with nothing to hide, hide nothing. Those who need six figures in legal help to quash subpoenas conceal crime. Fulton has a story to tell, along with the rest of those hired by Filner.— August 3, 2014 7:16 p.m.
Sorry, minimum-wage workers
A minimum wage hike would pass if put before the voters, and bring out young voters also. Mayor Faulkner would be foolish to force it on the ballot by veto. He'll bring working Democrats to the polls.— July 27, 2014 6:05 p.m.
How much did they pay you to move to Texas?
**GREEDY PEOPLE GO TO TEXAS** There is justice sometimes, even in this world.— July 5, 2014 11:01 a.m.
$6 million glass home for sale
This is on a 25'x100'+ lot. If this sells at that price, I would suspect money laundering. At that price, most ladies plan to tear down and rebuild, and South Mission is the pricier side of the Roller Coaster.— June 6, 2014 11:46 a.m.
$6 million glass home for sale
It's on the Boardwalk in North Mission Beach. Asking and getting are different.— June 5, 2014 3:53 p.m.
NFL seeks larger (court) audience
Helmet makers might go bankrupt when high school, college, and Pop Warner players sue. The injuries caused by their products are painfully obvious. They might have made billions on constant safety upgrades over the years, but instead chose denial and lawsuits. Concussion is just part of it, helmets and pads cause injury to any part of the body they contact.— June 5, 2014 11:23 a.m.
NFL seeks larger (court) audience
It's not merely that the equipment fails to protect, the equipment actually injures those struck by the helmet or padding in the course of play. The players have an excellent case. Sad that we need lawyers to reform a sport played by ten year olds. This is just the start, there are busted knees and broken bones as well.— June 4, 2014 7:40 p.m.
Opera members advise: fire the Campbells
"Written" is used loosely with Handel, he lifted liberally from hit tunes written by others. Certainly he was a great hit maker. If you wish to argue that the Germans wrote better, you must argue with the German composers themselves, who were very devoted to the Italian style. To our Modern taste, which enters the Baroque through Bach, Handel might seem the finer composer, but it's difficult to argue with the accounts of Handel's day, that gave first place to the Italians, and then the French, they heard it as it should be performed. But personal taste is the final answer for one person at least, but remember, you must always say, "The best I've heard so far.". To make that more definitive, you must listen to lots of Vivaldi, Scarlatti, Cavalli, Cesti, Monteverdi. If you love Handel, that should be a delightful task. Mozart's operas were universally acclaimed from the beginning, and have never lost their appeal. And they sparkle with real originality, a concept not valued in Handel's day. No one can deny such genius. But there is Puccini, and Verdi.— May 5, 2014 2:16 p.m.
