What Does Ethics Mean?/edited again 8/7/2010
Yeah, nan!! I'm glad you added your personal experience. See, women like you, who had the guts and the courage to stand up for your rights paved the way for the next generation to enjoy rights that are now pretty much taken for granted. My mom tells me some stories about being a working woman in the '60s and '70s, and boy, the sexism and the denial of the basic things the men took for granted!! Anyway, this is about ethics and not feminism, but I love stories like this, because it has both - and you stood up for what was right even though it cost you a great deal. Cool. Now that's ethics.— August 4, 2010 11:42 a.m.

Refried, I've heard it said many times that NO ONE uses drugs because they are illegal. Anyone inclined to use drugs will do so, regardless of the legality.— August 3, 2010 7:13 p.m.

Jay, me too!! We were the ones with our notebooks, writing down our classmates antics for future use!! I'm honored to see your face here, I grew up in NY and Wolfman Jack was a huge part of our radio experience, along with Cousin Brucie, and FM radio station KPLJ (I think). For some reason we cannot include links anymore. Maybe you could help?— August 3, 2010 7:05 p.m.

But the second cook risks the ire of the entire line and the head chef and the table waiting for their food, so you can see how a person's ethics can be perverted to suit the needs of "the greater good" while being in a quandry of their own. This person could lose their job, and the goodwill of the rest of the staff. They know it's wrong, and still choose to do nothing because the ramifications are too great. They could report it (whistle blow), but then the restaurant may lose its A rating and hence customers, forcing the layoff of many of the line staff and others. It is indeed a domino situation. This is the situation I encountered when I saw the dogs in the car and called animal control. I had surfers surrounding me, telling me to get away from the car, that's not cool, etc, etc, but I called anyway. So many people would not do anything. They all stood around, and I actually left. I got about 15 feet and I ran back, shaking. I knew what I needed to do. I could not live with myself if I had not made that call.— August 3, 2010 6:10 p.m.

Here is a scenario - a restaurant line cook drops a steak. It's a busy night and some diners are getting impatient. He picks it up and throws it back on the grill for a couple seconds, then plates it. The other line cook is aghast. He thinks the guy should cook a new steak and suffer the consequences of an irate head chef. The first line cook thinks it is better not to piss off anyone and get the food out the door, because the head chef is a monster, and all the other dinners for that table are ready. What would you do? This seems like a matter of ethics on a small scale, but this is an example of where individual needs and beliefs shape how people respond.— August 3, 2010 5:08 p.m.
