Class Warfare
Right on, Nan!! Taking back the power is what we need now. While we sat on our Cristal-addled asses the last decade before it all went to hell in a handbasket, we allowed too few people too amass waaaaay too much control. I'll bet if the artificially-inflated economy were still chugging along as it was in 2005, we would still be turning a blind eye to the inevitable collapse. These brave people are bringing attention to what I consider criminal behavior and the perps are trying to label them as deadbeats. I think we all know who should be on the receiving end of that firehose!! I hope the long-term effect of this is non-complacency when backs are being scratched, regardless of the short-term result being the stellar rise of your net worth.— October 10, 2011 3:41 p.m.
Who caused San Diego's massive power failure September 8?
"Most trading firms and banks have really good risk management systems in place that won't allow a single trader to put on a hundred thousand cars of T-Bonds or whatever. It's the firms that get sloppy that mess up, like UBS etc." They didn't get sloppy, they got caught. The reason why the financial rewards are astronomical boils down to the simple concept of honesty - it is no longer an asset, indeed it is a liability if you want to join the fat cats. You have to pay a lot of money to someone to play the game, and eventually the enrichment of dishonest people leads to a very corrupt society - the one we are seeing now. Every one has a price and no one is willing to blow the whistle, because money equals power (also the reason why incredulously, many of these influential people are not in jail). Risk management is a joke - the only risk management corporations and the governments they influence take is whether or not they should wait a year in case BMW comes out with a better body style.— October 10, 2011 11:17 a.m.
San Diego unions push transaction tax
I'm a little verklempt by the group-hug going on, but Don, the book "Snark" by David Denby is one I think you would really enjoy, especially because of your on-line presence as a journalist and the reader's ability to comment on your stories. Check it out - it's a short read, really exposes snark for what it is and I had a lot of fun reading it. You will, too.— October 1, 2011 5:04 p.m.

San Diego unions push transaction tax
"2.Better yet, ban high-frequency trading." Ain't gonna happen, Don. The customer has spoken, and they want it NOW. SOX compliance, perhaps? A joke, then and now.— September 25, 2011 3:21 p.m.
Firefighters Extinguish Couch on Ocean Beach Street
RFG, there are some questions that can never be answered, especially when it concerns OB. We torched a coffee table once, just because it was there.— September 25, 2011 12:42 p.m.
murder most foul..the careful brown sparrow
Oh, nan, this is gripping. More "cow bell"!!— July 12, 2011 5:05 p.m.
Cat Cash Fever
I just read this in the paper. I'm sorry, but most vaccines are not necessary, and to put your cat through this annually to raise money makes the hair on my neck stand up. What are they going to do - hire cat police? This would most definitely wind up costing more money that it would generate. I also sense fines and penalties as a motivating factor. Last I heard, there were no news stories about someone being mauled by a rabid cat. Responsible cat owners take the advice of their vets and inoculate accordingly.— July 12, 2011 8:14 a.m.
End of the Trail
Jerry, your book "Afoot & Afield In San Diego County" is a staple in our house. I am so sorry about your health - I can only tell you how much your advice has meant to me and my husband. We walked in your foot steps many times, and will continue to do so for as long as we can. Take care - as an avid hiker, you changed my life.— July 6, 2011 2:42 p.m.
Scripps Investments & Loans 17 percent return didn't last
"Real estate is very volatile in certain markets such as San Diego. Investors may believe that their money is covered conservatively, but then values collapse quickly." Timing can definitely be your greatest asset or your ultimate demise. I always appreciated this answer from Bernard Baruch when asked how he became such a financial success - "I made my money by selling too soon."— June 11, 2011 9:45 a.m.
