La Scala Closes
Its luster wore off years ago and I honestly think they may have just been going through the motions. Red Sails is a great local place to eat. The Reader review for it was less than complimentary, but it does not advertise itself as a "white glove" place to eat. Just a nice, homey place to get a great Crab Louie, have a drink at the bar and eat some calamari or sit on the deck and bask in the sun. John the bartender is awesome. The Bali Hai is where you take friends visiting from out of town who have never been. I have been to many parties, celebrations and a wedding there. Perfect place to entertain.— January 13, 2011 4:18 p.m.
Pho Forager
The Noodle House in OB makes a fantastic pho and they have a full bar with great prices. They used to have dollar drafts until 6:00 - Lighthouse, I think. Not sure if they are still running this special. Pho Point Loma and Grill (yes, that is its name) on Midway, is getting great reviews. I have not been (just learned about its opening) but intend to check it out. Before all these pho shops opened, Phuong Trang was our go-to for pho and all food vietnamese. We still it love and try to get there at least a few times a year.— January 13, 2011 2:42 p.m.
La Scala Closes
I agree, JustWondering (not about the sentence ;). For being such a beautiful area, we have left much to be desired in the way of upscale dining. Roseville was a victim of the recession and a rather unorthodox location for a fine dining establishment. This new restaurant will fit in nicely and bring a much needed facelift to this address.— January 13, 2011 2:09 p.m.
Roth, Rhymes with Goth
Robin Roth rocks!! I am actually listening to 91X again because of her and Steve West. I am huge fan of the music she plays - and of her because she is a genuinely nice person.— January 13, 2011 12:26 p.m.
New Year's Bolero
Sounds like Cowles this weekend. I can never understand how exercise out in the fresh air is a chore to most and sitting on the couch is preferable. You can actually do both if you learn how to multi-task.— January 3, 2011 10:12 a.m.
Signs in my Complex
"some residents will be deactivated" - LOL!! It's like something out of "Logan's Run"!! I remember seeing a tee-shirt with an electric guitar with a circle/slash around it. Below it said "No Fun Allowed". Post a couple of those around and maybe they will ease up? I doubt it. These people love the micro-power of the HOA.— January 3, 2011 9:17 a.m.
Pedaling Diego: San Diego's Growing Bicycle Mania
Just like everything, a fun, healthy activity has been reduced to bickering and derision. When I first got my road bike, I was PETRIFIED. I actually had a driver in La Jolla swerve at me intentionally. I learned how to ride my bike in traffic, and I obey all traffic laws. Not every bike rider is a jerk. Just like motorists, there are always going to be some bad apples. We are SHARING the road. No one owns it. Cycling is fun, and a great way to get exercise out in the fresh air. It's too bad it's being reduced to an "us against them" mentality in San Diego. I hope both motorists and cyclists try to understand each other's frustrations and work toward being courteous rather than confrontational.— January 3, 2011 8:49 a.m.
Letting go of a lousy Christmas
I'm sorry about your kitty, Dave. I dread the day I have to do this. This is a great sad story.— December 30, 2010 12:31 p.m.
