The Similarity Between the Orca and Toyota
Yes, it is open to debate whether or not certain species are better off in captivity or if ones that are born in captivity can even be counted, having no exposure to their natural environment. Also, the sheer size of some of the animals lends some credibility to the fact that really, humans should not be getting that close to them. A whale dragging you by your hair is going to do a lot of damage, even if the whale's intent is to just play. My cat getting agressive and rearing up and scratching me is going to be a lot more serious if she was a white Siberian tiger. Sometimes animals, just like humans, get pissed. The difference is a scratch versus a mauling. You are so right, AG, about kid's lack of exposure to animals. I grew up with tons of animals, so I understood the difference between animals in captivity - the zoo versus the deer in our backyard. A lot of kids think that it is normal for animals to live in captivity and are not sensitive to their instinctive natures. These are the people who grow up, get a dog, and take it to the pound the minute it chews up their slippers.— March 2, 2010 12:43 p.m.
Weeping for Coco
Just got a little shiver regarding the Charlotte's Web reference. I loved that book and probably read it 10 times as a kid. I love the movie. I was just thinking about Templeton the rat after Pete's remarks about how he hates rats. Templeton sings about life being a "veritable smorgasbord", feasting on the trash left on the fairgrounds at the end of the day. Pete mentioned that he hates rats and that they carry numerous diseases. Pete, rats are attracted to garbage. More precisely, OUR garbage. This does not make them dirty. We are the pigs. We provide the trash that they eat. It is literally a smorgasbord, how much trash we generate. Can you blame them? You may want to think about cleaning up your house. Probably solve your rat problem in a day. AG, I joined a food co-op. The produce is much cheaper, and it is all organic. Cost me $15.00 for a year to become a member. The food co-ops have classes and other events where they introduce vegetarianism to people slowly, without any pressure or guilt. Last night I had a hearty meal of sausage and peppers on rolls made with fried onions, peppers and these: http://www.altmeat.com/posts/40/lightlifes_italia… I swear, if you buy these and slice an onion and a pepper, fry it all up in olive oil, and pile it on a roll of your choice (preferably whole grain) you will like it. These are the only brand of fake sausage that tastes good. Really good. And I have tried them all.— March 2, 2010 10:53 a.m.

I posted this blog about hunting and I stand by it. Someone who considers herself an authority on hunting tried to indimidate me into changing my stance and I refused to back down. You cannot back down on something you feel strongly about. If someone gleans even the slightest bit of awareness from your intention, you have accomplished something. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/weblogs/msgrants-ra…— March 2, 2010 8:34 a.m.

Money. We are holding them captive to make money. The Shamu show is a huge income earner. But it is true. Whales born in captivity have no ability to survive on their own. Their instincts have not needed to develop beyond the reward system.— March 2, 2010 8:26 a.m.

Get To Know Me (and stop sending those goofy questionnaires)
"I caught a rat in a glue trap today but couldn't find the heart to kill it so I just threw it away." You profess to not having the heart to kill it. If not, then what you did was intentionally cruel and unforgivable. Subjecting ANY living creature to senseless acts of cruelty based on ignorant bias is intolerable. Rats are highly intelligent, friendly, playful and curious. I took three rats out yesterday on a Humane Society visit to a nursing home. They curled up on the patient's laps and made them smile. These people have little to smile about. Perhaps you should educate yourself more about animal behavior. It would do you a world of good.— March 1, 2010 8:26 a.m.
The Hare Krishna Late Nite Critical Reality Krush
I went back and read oragimi's link that I commented on back in 2008. Since then, I have been intentionally side-swiped by an a**hole in an SUV going down Torrey Pines on my road bike. This guy looked me right in the eye. Back then my point was that the SDPD would use any excuse to take down a group that goes against everything that they stand for, which is blind obedience to their uneducated stance on all things progressive, because they do not support it, or even understand it. I came across as sounding like a supporter of the vehicle drivers, but what I really meant was that the car drivers did not come out with the intent to create havoc, whereas the CM riders did. The drivers of the cars just happened to be at the wrong intersection at the wrong time. My concern at the time was also that CM riders would incite the ire of the SDPD and they in turn would use the lack of organization as an excuse to open fire. I also did not do my homework. I support CM's intent. Public awareness is a huge concern for all of us, because so many remain ignorant of the actual cause, and react accordingly. I have been a driver during a CM run, and I opened my windows and cheered them on. I just wish they would be a little more careful. Having encountered a person who wanted to run me off the road changed my mind about a lot of things. People in cars are dangerous and it's very easy to say "I just did not see her".— February 28, 2010 4:48 p.m.

Man up and kill the rat, coward. Don't start something you can't finish. And I thought you were on a diet.— February 28, 2010 4:28 p.m.

I am going to work on posting some photos of my posse as well, but after what you went through I'm not so sure! Maybe just a link. I'll give it my best shot. You just let me know when AG is back in town and we will kidnap her and get some drinks. Maybe go on a CM ride....— February 28, 2010 4:02 p.m.
