Fate of Chargers predicted
Farmer writes: "That could mean the league goes to one or more of the owners and says, "Look, you're not going to have the required support to do this. It's best for everyone involved if you stand down, but we will help you in the following ways…"" I think that "we will help you in the following ways" means one of two things: (A) The team or teams that don't move to LA will get paid, a lot, by the team or teams that do. There will be a "relocation fee" and most of that money will be given to the team or teams that don't move. Or, (B) The NFL will arrange for one of these owners to sell their team for an obscene amount of money. If it's (A), then perhaps Spanos gets both a new stadium in San Diego and a huge check from the NFL/Rams, while the Rams move to LA. Or the Raiders get that deal to stay in Oakland. Spanos and Davis could both really use that money, because they're not flush with cash. If it's (B), then either the Chargers (or Raiders) move to LA, or someone buys the Chargers (Raiders) and keeps them in San Diego (Oakland), or maybe Kroenke (the Rams owner) buys the Chargers (Raiders) for LA and sells the Rams to someone who keeps them in St. Louis. Or, Kroenke trades franchises, and gets the Chargers or Raiders for LA while Davis or Spanos ends up owning the Rams in St. Louis.— July 13, 2015 12:11 p.m.
New judge for accused murderer
Defense may have wanted a judge they think is more likely to be sympathetic to defendants, or skeptical of prosecutors. Judge Cortez is a former prosecutor. Judge Swift is not, and apparently he once said he thought the local judges were "a little bit too cozy with the prosecutorial and police side". http://sbcba.org/judges/BertSwift.pdf— July 10, 2015 2:04 p.m.
Viviano abruptly departs UCSD in turmoil’s midst
Looks like Viviano was in way over his head at UCSD, couldn't even begin to fix the problems he was hired to fix, and bailed out. The Aisen-USC thing looks sleazy. Guess that's what happens when the rabid pursuit of dollars by so-called non-profit institutions like USC makes them look less like universities and more like corporate pirates.— July 10, 2015 1:49 p.m.
Kevin Faulconer’s stealthy web war
I agree, the competing interests here are bigger than Faulconer himself. The Lincoln Club crew is aggressive here because they very much want to keep Faulconer as strong as possible. They see him as perhaps the only Republican who can win citywide right now and they see him as someone who might even be able to win statewide someday. He's their next Pete Wilson. But Faulconer's political ceiling will be low if Spanos & Co. damage him politically on their way out the door.— June 9, 2015 10:26 p.m.
Kevin Faulconer’s stealthy web war
Looks like Faulconer and his political operatives are pretty sure that the Chargers are running away to L.A. no matter what happens in S.D. They know that the label "The Mayor Who Lost The Chargers" is going to stick to Faulconer, and everything they do now is just an effort to limit the damage of that label.— June 8, 2015 5:16 p.m.
Berry disconcerting
It's understandable that you don't know the local traffic patterns in Carlsbad, if you are a staff person for Mr. Caruso's company in Los Angeles. If you were a resident of Carlsbad and familiar with the city, you would also know that Carlsbad is already flush with sales tax revenue from numerous malls and major hotels/resorts including the La Costa and Aviara resorts. But, it's understandable that someone who doesn't live here wouldn't know those things.— May 29, 2015 8:27 p.m.
Berry disconcerting
Caruso's shopping center would be at I-5 and Cannon Road, near the large Carlsbad outlet mall and a row of auto dealers. Traffic congestion on I-5 in that area is already bad. Another large shopping center there would turn that segment of I-5 into near-permanent gridlock. Hopefully Carlsbad voters are smart enough to figure that out.— May 29, 2015 12:16 p.m.
Union-Tribune’s new master claims his due
Do we know how much Papa Doug was paying John Lynch at the U-T?— May 26, 2015 9:44 a.m.
NFL team could play in L.A. in 2016
The wind often kicked up inside Candlestick about 3:30 or 4 pm, near the end of an afternoon Giants or 49ers game. It was amazing how much trash blew through there when the wind picked up. And, of course, night games at Candlestick were brutally cold.— May 26, 2015 9:44 a.m.
Maybe new U-T management will help
Count me among the many who view the U-T advertising circulars and unsolicited free newspapers as litter dumped on my driveway. Nothing more, nothing less. It's just litter.— May 26, 2015 9:39 a.m.
