Hwy 76: Pave it, stripe it, and let's drive it already!
"Longtime locals still question why there were no exit ramps planned for access to the area’s two busiest roads." Why? Probably because building on-ramps and off-ramps would have required the tear-down of numerous businesses and other properties, including an elementary school, near El Camino Real and Mission Road.— October 12, 2015 12:59 p.m.
Dollar Rent A Car demands reporters' names
I've done that twice at LAX airport hotels. Both times, the hotel only required us to stay one night, the evening before our flight out, in order to park there for free for our entire trip. I'm sure they would like travelers to stay one night before their trip out of LAX and one night after they return, and probably many people do that.— October 12, 2015 12:53 p.m.
Gov. Brown vetoes bills to reform utilities commission
"Will the CA legislature attempt to override the vetoes?" No, they won't. A veto can be overriden by a 2/3 majority in each house of the legislature, but the custom in California is to never override. The last governor's veto that was overriden was in the 1970s (the first time Jerry Brown was governor). And it's not just a matter of legislators not wanting to cross their own party's governor. Schwarzenegger vetoed about one-fourth of the bills passed when he was governor, and the heavily Democratic legislature did not override any of those vetoes. Same was true when Republicans Wilson and Deukmejian were governor. The Democratic-controlled legislature overrode none of their vetoes. What's next for Union-Tribune real estate?
Manchester has announced the sale of the U-T Mission Valley property to a developer who is "an old friend" (quote from Manchester's consigliere Dick Gibbons). http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/2015/sep… Best guess is that they thought opposition to the Mission Valley development would be less vociferous if Manchester's name was not on the development.— September 11, 2015 7:55 p.m.
Eli Broad's billion-dollar blackjack?
"American Action Network, headed by ex-Republican senator Norm Coleman and former Richard Nixon and George H.W. Bush presidential aide Fred Malek" Fred Malek is the former Nixon aide who, at Nixon's request, counted the number of Jews working in the Nixon administration because Nixon was paranoid that Kissinger was filling the administration with Jews.— September 11, 2015 7:49 p.m.
Julie Harper on trial — take 2

Polls by Lincoln Club, Chargers diverge widely
Don, I agree that Kroenke buying the Chargers or Raiders for LA seems like a possible outcome, the biggest sticking point being that it requires the addition of someone else who is immensely wealthy, in addition to Kroenke. I think that sticking point is why "insiders" are not predicting this as the most likely scenario. It's easy to imagine Kroenke overpaying for the Raiders or Chargers like Steve Ballmer overpaid for the LA Clippers, but then who is going to pay about $1 billion to buy the Rams and keep them in St. Louis?— August 16, 2015 11:16 a.m.
Polls by Lincoln Club, Chargers diverge widely
One suspects that the GOP/Lincoln Club/Faulconer poll was taken with the intent of showing over-50% support, and the Chargers polls were taken with the intent of showing under-50% support. Mission accomplished on both counts. The consensus among NFL sportswriters seems to be that the eventual outcome will be the Rams and Chargers playing in Inglewood, with the Raiders playing in the 49ers stadium or taking the best deal they can get in the next few years from either St. Louis or San Diego. We'll probably find out by the end of the year.— August 14, 2015 9:02 p.m.
Fate of Chargers predicted
Good points, Don. If the Chargers get $100 million to not move to LA, then the city of SD would turn around and ask the Chargers to contribute that $100 million to a new SD stadium. That is a problem from the NFL's point of view. Still, though, imposing a relocation fee is an easy way to distinguish between the three teams, because it effectively forces the Raiders (or perhaps the Chargers, but more likely the Raiders) to either stay where they are and take the money, or sell the team to someone who can afford to pay the relocation fee.— July 13, 2015 2:14 p.m.
Pernicano's out
Those hotels/motels are in Mission Valley along I-8, not in Hillcrest. No one is going to walk from there to UCSD, and especially not to Scripps. From a hotel at the Pernicano site, hotel guests will walk to UCSD or Scripps rather than having to struggle with parking at either hospital. That location would be far more convenient to the hospitals than the Mission Valley hotels are.— July 13, 2015 12:22 p.m.
