Sara Jacobs, 29, runs for Congress
Funny that you don't name any of the male candidates who might "siphon away" a vote from your candidate. Men have every right to run, but women are just siphoning away votes from "stalwart" men? That's a load of BS.— May 12, 2018 11:22 a.m.
Diamondbacks haul out league commissioner scam
Kroenke had a leg up on the Inglewood property before Spanos knew about it. He reportedly offered Dean a chance to get in as the junior partner at the outset, but Dean didn't want that. Kroenke had the inside track because Walmart owned the parcel; Kroenke has developed many Walmart properties and his wife is a Walmart heiress. And, of course, Spanos talks a big game but never had the financial resources to build a stadium on his own or even to go 50-50 on building a stadium.— March 3, 2017 10:11 p.m.
Union-Tribune lays off journalists
Don, I thought you put the (sic) there because you questioned whether Light genuinely felt bad (or badly) for those who were laid off. Ha.— February 15, 2017 11:21 p.m.
Union-Tribune lays off journalists
I feel badly for Gehlken, who is a good writer. But that sports staff is destined to shrink further; it's just too large for a dwindling newspaper in a city with only one major pro sports franchise.— February 14, 2017 10:36 p.m.
Qualcomm accused of illegal scheme
Apple complaining that someone overcharged *them* must be quite amusing to anyone who has ever looked at the price of an iPad, iPhone, or Macbook.— January 24, 2017 9:46 p.m.
NFL supposedly upset with Chargers' move
Yes, UCLA's lease at the Rose Bowl runs through the 2042 football season. It was extended as part of the deal to make improvements at the Rose Bowl including premium seating sections. And I'm not a UCLA fan, but I'd rather see a game at the Rose Bowl than at any sterile luxury palace, including the one that Kroenke is building.— January 23, 2017 10:20 p.m.
Big Fletcher donors behind MLS venue grab
The MLS group would be paying for the stadium and paying the city for the land. Their total investment would likely be in the ballpark (pun intended) of $300 million, and SDSU's contribution to this proposed project would be zero money and apparently just asking the city council to vote yes. SDSU can't expect to get exactly what its biggest football fans would want if SDSU is paying for neither the stadium nor the land. If SDSU was putting the $300 million on the table, that would be a different story.— January 23, 2017 9:28 p.m.
U-T print circulation continues to plummet
The future of major daily papers is what's happening at the Denver Post, where a hedge fund owns the chain of papers and has laid off two-thirds of the staff, with the aim of making profit on as little overhead as possible until the profits run out and they close the doors. There was an excellent article about the Denver Post's direction in 5280 magazine last month.— October 17, 2016 11:35 p.m.
Mira Mesa braces for mega population growth
Every single comment you have ever made on SD Reader has been a pro-development, "pave the open space and build high-density housing" comment. The only question is whether your hyper-aggressive development agenda comes from being employed by a developer or by a public-relations firm that works for developers.— September 22, 2016 12:30 a.m.
Mystery lurks behind Chargers latest $1 million campaign cash
Maybe the Chargers *should* be desperate to avoid becoming second fiddle in Inglewood, but it doesn't look that way. If they were desperate to avoid LA, they would have made a deal with Faulconer for a Mission Valley stadium. That deal would have been relatively easy compared to the impossibility of winning the convadium vote.— September 2, 2016 8:35 p.m.
