Letter-writer garners fan base

Gary, Fun fact. I do live in Tijuana. Second fun fact. Carlsbad is 34.9 miles away from downtown San Diego. Tijuana is 19.9 miles away. Carlsbad has a population of around 110,000. Tijuana near 1.7 million (many of them American citizens that cross the border everyday). There are more readers in Tijuana than Carlsbad, and many people told me they went to check out the burger joint I suggested... Don't get a passport just for a burger, but you should do it for everything that this city has to offer.

San Diego businesses chafe under Yelp's increasing power

When I was looking for writing gigs, I found a craigslist ad. After a few email exchanges I found out this: a) I needed to have a great rating with Yelp. b) I was going to get $50-100 and a free meal at restaurants that they already had planned out. c) The reviews always had to be 4 or 5 stars. Sweet deal, but I did not even have a yelp account and good rating takes time and effort to get. But just goes to show how Yelp and their contributors work.

Border crossing rules have changed at San Ysidro

I am 6'4 and white as hell... but I was born and grew up in Mexico. I've been going through the Mexican lane and rarely have they stopped me and told me I am going on the wrong lane. I simply tell them "I am Mexican," and they let me go on through. I heard that if you don't have a passport or an ID, you can simply tell them you forgot it (and they let you through... supposedly). They are simply targeting the large amounts of homeless people that have been moving down to Tijuana. If a criminal or someone undocumented wants to cross, they will simply get in a car, since it's still free for all. Many Mexicans say "If they built a wall, we should built one too and have the right to ask for papers!" The problem is... Americans aren't very eager to come down to Mexico, while Mexicans are trying to escape the increasing poverty. AKA, it is all pointless and it is all for show. Hopefully, it will die down and border crossing will go back to how it was.

Tijuana doesn’t want another 2008

jnojr, David wasn't walking through dark alleys littered with hookers and junkies. He was exiting a store in Calle Sexta, which is a busy party street. In fact, he was exiting the store next to one of the most popular late hour bars of the moment and had been sober for almost a month. This was a case of really bad luck. Come back to Tijuana and have an adventure, it has changed so much (for the better) in the past couple of years. Stay safe. Regards, Matthew
