**La Mesa Police Department Weekly Bulletin for Aug. 5-11:** The Aug. 6 National Night Out drew about 200 people to the Emergency Preparedness Fair at Grossmont Center. In addition, 13 neighborhoods held parties and potlucks. On Aug. 9, LMPD's traffic detail targeted speeding drivers in La Mesa. Officers wrote 39 citations and impounded a vehicle because the driver didn't have a valid license. Police issued 106 citations during the week and made 25 arrests.

Thanks for the beautiful word picture of your old neighborhood. I'll have to go see it. I remember family drives when I was younger and looking for the white swan swimming at Anthony's. I was also fascinated by the Grossmont High School building visible from I-8. I pictured Nancy Drew and her friends exploring it to solve a mystery. I still think it's a cool-looking building.

**Motorcycle Safety:** The La Mesa Police Department’s traffic unit Aug. 2 motorcycle safety operation yielded 21 citations and "one motorcyclist’s ride was impounded due to a license suspension," according to an LMPD news release. Police also issued several warnings for lesser violations. The operation, "an effort to lower deaths and injuries," targeted both motorcycles and vehicle drivers. The LMPD weekly bulletin included this safety tip: "Lane splitting, sometimes known as lane sharing, filtering or white-lining, refers to the process of a motorcyclist riding between lanes of stopped or slower moving traffic or moving between lanes to the front of traffic stopped at a red light. Motorcyclists who are competent enough riders to lane split should follow these guidelines if choosing to lane split: 1) Travel at a speed that is no more than 5 mph faster than other traffic. 2) It is not advisable to lane split if the flow of traffic is at 30 mph or faster. 3) Typically, it is safer to split between the #1 and #2 lanes than between the other lanes. 4) Consider the total environment in which you are splitting, including the width of the lanes and size of the surrounding vehicles."

**Weekly Police Report:** The La Mesa PD bulletin for the week of July 29 through Aug. 4 includes a case highlight and some cautionary advice. The case: an attempted residential burglary that occurred between 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 3 and 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 4. The resident reported that an unknown suspect attempted to gain entry into the home by removing a window screen. However, the window was locked and "there is no suspect description at this time," according to the bulletin. The notice continued, "Preventing residential burglaries can be as simple as remembering to close and lock windows and doors before leaving the house and before bed. Report suspicious persons and behavior by calling the police department’s 24-hour, non-emergency line: 667-1400. For incidents in progress that threaten life or property, dial 911. Suspicious activities include persons peering over fences or into windows, persons with seemingly no purpose walking through the neighborhood, or a person going door-to-door either asking strange questions or claiming to sell a product but [has] no solicitor’s license." During the week, police responded to 1,196 calls for service. There were 599 calls to 911 and 298 officer-initiated calls. Police made 43 arrested and issued 79 citations.

Peter, best wishes for a rapid recovery. I post frequently on the La Mesa Holler page and visit the pages for other neighborhoods. I enjoy your posts and the perspectives of newcomers to the area. When you're better, you and Alan should visit La Mesa

**Do you feel lucky?:** I felt really lucky on Friday (Aug. 2) before I went to the Manny Cepeda salsa concert at Grossmont Center. I posted a Holler about the center's concert series on July 2, and this was the first performance I attended this year. The two-hour concerts start at 6 p.m., and the center has a raffle during the 7 p.m. break. The music was fantastic, many people danced, and I won the last of the six raffle prizes. I received a $25 gift certificate for Gino's Wide Shoes and Repair and a coupon for a free express bowl from India Express. I dined on chicken keema and danced to Latin American music, it was quite the international experience! Sometimes 'La Vida Es Un Carnaval.' Concerts continue through Aug. 30.

I still think it's a cool-looking building.— August 13, 2013 9:41 p.m.

4) Consider the total environment in which you are splitting, including the width of the lanes and size of the surrounding vehicles."— August 5, 2013 8:26 p.m.

Police made 43 arrested and issued 79 citations.— August 5, 2013 8:07 p.m.

Peter, best wishes for a rapid recovery. I post frequently on the La Mesa Holler page and visit the pages for other neighborhoods. I enjoy your posts and the perspectives of newcomers to the area. When you're better, you and Alan should visit La Mesa http://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/la-mesa/holler/ Liz— August 3, 2013 8:52 a.m.

30.— August 3, 2013 8:31 a.m.
