**Summer Finales:** Thursday and Friday are the final nights for two La Mesa summer events. Aug. 29 is the last night for the Back to the '50s Car Show. It's from 5 to 8 p.m. on La Mesa Boulevard. Grossmont Center's concert series ends Aug. 30 with a performance by BlueFrog Band in Macy's Courtyard. They'll play blues and rock from 6 to 8 p.m. The center has a raffle for prizes at 7 p.m.

La Mesa Library
**100 Years of the La Mesa Library, Condensed Version:** The La Mesa Library was among the branches of the County of San Diego library system that opened in 1913. That's one of the details I learned at the Aug. 24 presentation at the branch. La Mesa locations included Porter Hall (
http://www.cityoflamesa.com/DocumentCenter/Home/V…
) The hall is named for Dr. Henry Porter, who served as a medical missionary in China. The library was housed from 1957-2008 in a building on land where the police station is now located. The branch now on Allison Avenue is the third busiest in the county system. Vista and San Marcos claim the top two spots.

He will talk about 1913 La Mesa. The library also promises refreshments, a craft and a concert by singer-songwriter Michael Ganey.

**Sewer Root-Foaming Project:** Work is scheduled to start today on the City of La Mesa project to minimize root intrusion in the underground sewer system. Roots can enter the sewer through joints in older sewer pipes. The City hired a contractor, Pacific Sewer Maintenance Corporation, to do the root-foaming work. The work is expected to last 30 to 45 days, and a City news release said there should be no disruptions to sewer services. For info, call 667-1450.

**Community Bicycle Rodeo on Aug. 31:** Children of all ages are invited to the free bicycle rodeo that will be held Saturday, Aug. 31, from 9 to 11 a.m. Bring your bicycle and helmet to Nan Couts Cottage, 5045 Memorial Dr. The event, sponsored by the La Mesa Walk-n-Roll Safe Routes Program and the La Mesa Human Relations Commission, is an opportunity for bike owners to brush up on safety skills and practice safe riding on an obstacle course. Raffle prizes include a bicycle, and the La Mesa Lions Club is providing snacks. For a flyer and sign-up form, go to

neighborhoods/la-mesa -- La Mesa
**Stolen Car Stats:** During January through June of this year, 98 vehicles were reported stolen to the La Mesa Police, according to the weekly LMPD bulletin. This figure is down 1% compared to the first six months of 2012 when 99 vehicle thefts were reported. During the first six months of 2013, 73% of stolen vehicles were recovered by the end of June. Half of the thefts (50%) of thefts occurred in a parking lot (including residential lots), 29% occurred on the street, and 15 percent occurred in a driveway. The top three stolen vehicles by make were: Honda (29%), Toyota (10%), and Ford (8%).

Ride-along with San Diego’s Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol
Mercy, you're not alone in giggling about the name in relation to law enforcement. When Melody and Gregg started the one-week RSVP training, someone told the aspiring volunteers that their ranks included "a couple of Stoners."

**100 Years of the La Mesa Library, Condensed Version:** The La Mesa Library was among the branches of the County of San Diego library system that opened in 1913. That's one of the details I learned at the Aug. 24 presentation at the branch. La Mesa locations included Porter Hall (http://www.cityoflamesa.com/DocumentCenter/Home/V…) The hall is named for Dr. Henry Porter, who served as a medical missionary in China. The library was housed from 1957-2008 in a building on land where the police station is now located. The branch now on Allison Avenue is the third busiest in the county system. Vista and San Marcos claim the top two spots.— August 27, 2013 1:39 p.m.

For info, call 667-1450.— August 22, 2013 12:42 p.m.
