**Written Protests Could Block Sewer Rate Increases:** The City Council's hearing on proposed two-year sewer rate increases is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, in council chambers, 8130 Allison Ave. Joaquin de La Mesa posted on April 11 about the hearing. According to the notice
http://www.cityoflamesa.com/DocumentCenter/View/5…
, written protests from property owners could sway the council on this issue. This is how it's phrased in the notice: "If written protests against the proposed changes are not presented by a majority of the affected property owners, the City Council may authorize the sewer charge adjustments." The notice details what must be included in the protest letter, information like parcel number, sewer service address, a statement of opposition, and signature. While letters, faxes, and e-mails will be accepted until noon, the notice stated written protests will be accepted until the close of the hearing.

neighborhoods/la-mesa -- La Mesa
Joaquin: I get oil changes at I La Mesa Motor Clinic (5120 Guild St.) for reasons described in my April 12 response to Siobhan. In a related topic, I hope people post about fundraising car washes. My car gets dirty (lots of trees and birds near where I live) so it would be nice to have car-cleaning money go for a good cause.

Thanks for the warning. Parts of La Mesa are very close to San Carlos, so I posted this on the La Mesa Holler page, with reference to LMPD phone number.

**EDCO Rates May Rise:** The La Mesa city council on April 23 voted unanimously to schedule a June 25 public hearing on proposed rate increases for the removal of trash and recyclables. EDCO wants to raise the monthly cost for residential service from $18.42 to $19.09. The proposed monthly commercial rate would rise from $97.32 to $99.32. According to a report from city manager David Witt, rates have not increased since 2009. If approved by the council in June, rates would increase on July 1.

**Police ticket "at least" 86 speeders:** The La Mesa Police Department ticketed "at least" 86 speeding drivers during the fifth “Traffic Safety Enforcement Program” held on April 19. Those ticketed last Friday included a driver "caught and cited for speeding twice in the same day on the same stretch of road," according to a police department news release. In addition, a motorcyclist was arrested for reckless driving and charged with doing 63 mph in a 25-mph school zone. Funding for the program came from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. And "efforts will continue throughout the year and as long as it takes to get the message out to not speed in the City of La Mesa."

**Coins for Parks:** Sometimes it's nice to stop and read the signs. I've walked past the Grossmont Center fountains numerous times, but I only recently discovered that all coins tossed into the fountains in the Macy's courtyard are donated to the La Mesa Parks and Recreation Foundation. For more info about the foundation, go to:

neighborhoods/la-mesa -- La Mesa
Siobhan: I am very happy to recommend La Mesa Motor Clinic, 5120 Guild St. (463-7773). Owner Jim Arnett has worked on the Swain family's cars for years, and I've been a customer since the early '90s. He's honest, and his prices are reasonable. After going to mechanics who tried to scare me into spending a lot of money for things I wasn't even sure were part of my car, it's so refreshing to go to Jim. He'll tell me that in the future I'll need to have something worked on, explain what that work involves and give a time estimate like "in a couple months, you'll need…" Jim is so well-regarded that when he's referred me to other La Mesa car-related businesses, I received an FOJ (Friend of Jim) discount. Good luck with your vehicle!

According to the notice http://www.cityoflamesa.com/DocumentCenter/View/5…, written protests from property owners could sway the council on this issue. While letters, faxes, and e-mails will be accepted until noon, the notice stated written protests will be accepted until the close of the hearing.— May 9, 2013 8:43 p.m.

Joaquin: I get oil changes at I La Mesa Motor Clinic (5120 Guild St.) for reasons described in my April 12 response to Siobhan. In a related topic, I hope people post about fundraising car washes. My car gets dirty (lots of trees and birds near where I live) so it would be nice to have car-cleaning money go for a good cause.— April 30, 2013 3:13 p.m.

Thanks for the warning. Parts of La Mesa are very close to San Carlos, so I posted this on the La Mesa Holler page, with reference to LMPD phone number.— April 27, 2013 11:44 a.m.

If approved by the council in June, rates would increase on July 1.— April 25, 2013 4:14 p.m.

And "efforts will continue throughout the year and as long as it takes to get the message out to not speed in the City of La Mesa."— April 24, 2013 3:09 p.m.

For more info about the foundation, go to: http://www.cityoflamesa.com/index.aspx?nid=411.— April 16, 2013 8:47 p.m.

Good luck with your vehicle!— April 12, 2013 5:03 p.m.
