SD mayoral vote the last stand for state Republicans?
Speaking generally, the trend nationwide is accelerating progressive. People like Christie and Jeb Bush get this, and have moved on, portraying themselves as morally neutral and environmentally harmless. They downplay their ties to the vast corporate machine, though never as well as Democratic politicians, and try to play themselves off as less scary than their caricatures of the extreme liberal left. I don't know that this is a winning ticket anymore. Clinton's impeachment proved the culture wars are pretty much over with only the tea baggers hanging on to their flat earth ideals. And as Sarah Palin's fortunes demonstrated, there ain't enough of them around. A few pockets of ignorant backward Klan tards in the south and rural areas keep their guys in Congress but that will decrease over time. That's not to say the Republicans won't find a way to reconstitute and resurge, always some freak of nature like Reagan, or worse, Bush, springing out like a malignant tumor hiding somewhere in the body and killing off all the good parts.— February 10, 2014 10:39 a.m.

They're pretty much two sides of the same coin, aren't they? Though only time will tell what shape and form corruption takes when it comes to David, whereas Faulconer has long shown where his disposition lies. Miss Bob Filner yet?— February 10, 2014 10:19 a.m.

I agreed with him about the expansion. As for the stadium, just because he was in talks with them doesn't mean that it was going to happen, or that he wasn't going to get a good deal; all speculation now. I don't call either of those things backing down. Bob had the ability to take bad things and make them good. Rare ability that had to do with his lack of ego, bigger picture clarity, and understanding of overall goal.— February 8, 2014 7:56 a.m.
San Diego's Sacramento lobbyist to admit illegal gifting
I keep hearing about these "raves" for the Inglorious Toad. I question those "raves," what raves, from whom, for what? My guess is either they are self-generated, or from people who stand to benefit from his actions.— February 8, 2014 6:40 a.m.

The Inglorious Toad has done so much harm to this city just by way of reversing many of the Real Mayor's decisions and for no reason other than spite. Goldpelt has absolutely refused to do his duty by failing to stop the Toad from taking actions like this, which should only fall to an elected Mayor.— February 8, 2014 6:37 a.m.

Oh and by the way, Don, maybe now you'll believe me about Aguirre, lol.— February 7, 2014 10:13 p.m.

In response to Monaghan's post assessing David, up top: "David Alvarez is that kind of principled man. "David was born, raised, educated and now is settled here with his own family. He is intelligent, thoughtful, well-spoken, and experienced on City Council. He is in this race to serve the needs of regular people in the neighborhoods where they live. That would be all of us who have been ignored for years by a system that's geared to the interests of downtown movers and shakers. We need a mayor like David Alvarez who has the capacity to rebalance the resources of this city to serve its residents in many communities." I think "a principled man" "serving the needs of regular people in the neighborhoods where they live" might sound just a tad strained to the people and neighborhoods of District 8. A guy who didn't serve even one full term on the council can hardly be said to be committed to the people and neighborhoods in his district. A guy who backstabbed his people down in Barrio Logan on the community plan amendment in order to concede ground to the maritime industry at the last minute doesn't seem like the sort of guy who is committed to or concerned about the residents most affected by that industry. A guy who supported WalMart coming into a number of locations in the community when most of the vocal opposition to WalMart has come out of District 8. A guy who had to have been fully aware of what the Jacobs Plan would have meant to the working class people of his district, impacting them hardest of all, voted in favor of it. I agree that David talks a good game. He says all the right things, and maybe he even believes them. But frankly, with his lack of experience, lack of leadership and bad decisions as demonstrated in his short time on the council, and what seems to be an altogether too cozy relationship with certain people and groups in this city, it is difficult to see that he would be able to move this city along in the direction Mayor Bob Filner was going. I think we are looking at two bad choices, and I say that as a Democrat. Kev is the worse choice, but David may end up being a puppet just because of his weak support and lack of abilities. He may surprise us; I hope he does. I wish him well, if he wins. If the past is any indication of the future, I think we need to be very wary, very skeptical.— February 7, 2014 10:06 p.m.

No the election wasn't stolen from Frye; she almost won in a special election where the voters didn't get a chance to find out who and what she really was; if she believed she could win, she would have run again.— February 7, 2014 9:43 p.m.

Military contractors target Barrio Logan plan
Faulconer has made his opposition to the Barrio Logan community a key part of his campaign for mayor, frequently attacking its land-use limitations near the city's shipyards as a jobs buster. Barrio Logan community, or Barrio Logan community **plan**? Very telling slip of the tongue.— February 4, 2014 12:10 p.m.
