Cop traffic-stop report points to racial profiling
But 💯 % of the stops were initiated lawfully. If you feel the reason for the stop is illegal, or you believe you are innocent of the allegation for the stop, go the court and fight. It IS your Constitutional right. Everyone IS innocent until proven guilt in a court of law. It's the government's burden to prove your guilt, not your responsibility to prove your innocence. If a court finds in your favor then you're innocent. The simple truth is these whiners are complaining about is good proactive police work. Where officers use their training and experience to proactively find people who have broken the law, or are in the process of breaking it. For example, an officer stops a car for running a stop sign, while talking with the driver he sees something unusual in the car. He asks questions about it, the driver becomes obviously nervous, gives evasive responses, or tries to change the subject. This piques more curiosity and questions, ultimately leading to a detention to investigate further. Sometimes it goes nowhere, and the detention ends with the driver going on his or her way. Other times, it leads to an arrest and just might solve a heanous crime. What usually not included in all of these studies, are the reasons or justifications for the stop and follow on investigations. In each instance officers MUST thoroughly articulate those reasons in thief reports. If they fail to meet that burden, a complaint typically is NEVER issued by the prosecuting agency. This is part of the checks in the criminal justice system. The bottom line is if we all follow the law, including those pesky and annoying traffic laws, we wouldn't be stopped in the first place. Good policing is keeping your eyes open, having initiative, and taking action. The whiners seem to want officers to just drive around doing nothing for a shift. That's not policing, that's giving up. We are a society governed by laws, without them there would just be chaos.— December 6, 2016 12:36 p.m.
Stroke victim sues sheriff's department
Thank you for reluctant clarification. I really DO appreciate you bringing these stories to light. Without your diligence we'd never hear of them.— December 1, 2016 11:04 a.m.
Stroke victim sues sheriff's department
Well then I'm just wondering, especially with the additional comments you've added in response to posts, why the original blog post did not include words like, "...she blocked them for some inexplicable reasons endangering herself and possibly others...." I realize sensationism entices the reader but balance, in my opinion, implies fairness or factual reporting. Whereas "slammed" in this instance, conjures up images of World Wrestling Federal behemoths and acts of bodies being thrown to the canvass. For all we know, ole Rose, who is 70, and apparently not the sharpest tool in the shed, (from the description of the incident) may have been six feet tall, 300lbs and a retired Roller Derby jammer.— December 1, 2016 10:11 a.m.
Stroke victim sues sheriff's department
I question the adverbs used to describe the motions the "stroke victim" was subjected to. Lawyers, like performance artists, embellish their story to gain unwarranted sympathies from their audience. So, I'm just wondering is the poetic license in the blog yours, or text of the actual complaint?— November 30, 2016 10 a.m.
Balboa Park bypass bridge and parking project okayed
Millions of tax dollars over the decades has been collected from the citizens of San Diego. All of those 'free' spaces have been paid for many times over. Just because they've squander the money over and over doesn't mean we, the citizens didn't pay for those spaces. Yet our politicians pander to a billionaire's wet dream of transforming the park in his name. Char-Lou Benedict poses the obvious question posted above. Why wasn't an advisory vote on the ballot. Balboa Park is a regional asset supported by the taxpayers of the City of San Diego. Not a legacy trophy for Irwin Jacobs. As I posted earlier, I believe Measure "J" was an end-around to transfer dollars from Mission Bay Park to this boondoggle in Balboa Park. All so our Mayor would have a sugar daddy funding his bid for higher officer. Hey, Kev, you scratch my back and I'll fund your political aspirations. Your pal, Irv— November 16, 2016 5:03 p.m.
Balboa Park bypass bridge and parking project okayed
Gotta agree with Ponzi on this one. Free spaces will be exploited leaving an under performing parking garage a new drain on the City's General Fund. So first the Council will divert funds from the park to subsidize the bonds. Then, since they got you to pass Measure 'J' they'll divert monies from Mission Bay Park AND further delay the DeAnza redevelopment. Then after they've been caught they tell us there is no other alternative but to charge for parking all over the park, saying it's only fair that everyone pays. I'm usually not one for conspiracy theories, but this one is a long term masterful manipulation.— November 16, 2016 11:50 a.m.
Balboa Park bypass bridge and parking project okayed
Another Billionaire's wet dream subsidized by taxpaying citizens of San Diego. Doesn't matter if the last name is Spanos or Jacobs, it really about two things. A money stream for politicians who have their sites on higher office. And, getting others to pay for their ideas or monuments to themselves. Both Jacobs and Spanos are billionaires and could easily pay for this boondoggle. But I suspect you don't get to stay a billionaire by paying for boondoggles. No, you get others to do it for while you're laughing all the way to the bank. At $300,000 a parking space, at they at least striped in gold leaf?— November 15, 2016 11:34 a.m.
Cop allegedly didn't seek sex from women only
Just wondering how Hays passed his background investigation to get hired in the first place. The background examination includes a polygraph and psychological testing and interview. Seems, in this case, they were ineffective.— November 12, 2016 4:50 a.m.
Homeopathic doctor said what?
Yikes...Modern medicine? Weren't these the techniques used by medicine side shows in the late 19th and early 20th centuries? Wonder if he prescribes "snake oil" remedies too?— November 11, 2016 11:55 a.m.
Is today's election make or break for Union-Tribune?
Today's election will gave no effect on the U~T. It's still circling the drain and it's only a matter of time till it's pumped four miles off Pt. Loma with the rest of the effluent. What doesn't go there, will end up in the Miramar landfill after it's been used to line animal and bird cages.— November 8, 2016 3:53 p.m.
