San Diego cops control streetlight spy video
No one, not even the government, forces you or anyone else to install any surveillance technology inside your personal residence. You chose to own a smart phone, you chose not to put it in a drawer or container when not in use. Nevertheless, as the recent disclosure regarding the Google/Nest security system and the hidden microphone revealed, it’s a buyer/user beware world we live in. Technology can be a wonderful convenience but there are trade offs. No one, abosolutely no one, should believe Googles “do no evil” statement as fact, because it’s a fictional marketing ploy. As long as humans run the place, and greed exists at any level, the opportunity to do evil things happens at all levels. I have no problem with the “state” holding the video captured in public places. At least the state, as far as we know, is not monetizing the data unlike the “do no evil” private companies.— February 22, 2019 9:22 a.m.
San Diego cops control streetlight spy video
Why would anyone have an expectation of privacy when in a public place? It’s difficult if not impossible to move in public without be caught on a camera, cellphone video or other motion capture devices such as forward looking video becoming standard equipment in many cars today. Take the **recent in-the-News case of Jussie Smollett**, Chicago Police have over 50 hours of video from PRIVATE and public cameras. That video allowed them to track the “suspects” of the hoax back to a cab, then to a ride share and ultimately to their residence. Another example: the Boston Marathon bombers bothers were tracked backwards from the explosions and ultimately identified by PRIVATE video camera footage. Both of these examples were incidents committed in the public right-of-way, where citizens and police worked together to solve heinous and despicable acts. No one should have ***ANY EXPECTATION OF PRIVACY*** while out in public these days. And, of course, it goes without saying, if you’re not doing anything wrong in the first place you will have nothing to worry about.— February 21, 2019 12:05 p.m.
Balboa Park garage – after all the money – seems dead
One thought for San Diego taxpayers. Be AFRAID, be very afraid of the Balboa Park boondoggle being unabashedly portrayed as something good for the citizens of San Diego. If Mr. Jacobs wants this as his legacy then he can pay for it. It’s chump change to a billionaire. It’s bad enough that taxpayers will be stuck covering the ongoing costs to operate a facility that many don’t want in the first place. Think about all the money already wasted and not a single spade of earth has turned over. With all of San Diego’s needs in the physical plant operations of the city I’m sure our tax dollars can be spent more wisely elsewhere.— February 20, 2019 3:41 p.m.
Risks rise as San Diego's painted curbs fade
Both Bruce Herring and Jack McGrory, assistant city manager at the time were present and responsible. Then McGrory became the City Manager but they were both involved during the Golding and Murphy mayoral years. I believe McGrory came up with infamous Manger’s Proposal #1 which began the underfunding scheme for the pension system. Today, McGrory is aligned with SDSU’s stadium redevelopment project. That’s gotta be bad for taxpayers !!!!!— February 19, 2019 10:31 a.m.

You missed the point. The City does have such a database. It knows where every pipe is laid. Every street light is mounted and probably every type of bulb used. It certainly knows where its parking meters are. Water meters too. The problem is the wasting of limited financial resources on inane projects and so called consultant. How many times have we read stories about spending $100k to study some widget. Or spending millions to rent / buy this or that only to learn hundreds of thousands more are needed. It all too easy to waste other people’s money and it happens every day in Enron by the Sea.— February 19, 2019 4:32 a.m.

How can they maintain it if they don’t even know they have it to begin with?It is beyond fathomable, in the so called Information Age, a city the size of San Diego has no up-to-date geo-database detailing it street use. Has no maintenance database or plan to maintain its assets. ***UNBELIEVABLE!***— February 18, 2019 6:34 p.m.

Once again we should thank the Auditor’s Office for shedding light on the ongoing mismanagement of the City of San Diego. Without leadership the “willy-nilly” policies of the past administrations as well as our current one just keep on letting the City deteriorate further and further. The Auditor’s office has been in place for several years now, it time to go back and make sure past recommendations to clean up mismanagement and waste are being implemented.— February 18, 2019 2:06 p.m.
Can Soon-Shiong grab reporters' jewels?
I’m just wondering if this was in place during Don Bauder’s era at the U~T, would Captain Money and the Golden Girl been published? Or would the story of J. David Dominelli and Nancy Hoover’s exploits in San Diego died on the vine?— February 14, 2019 2:33 p.m.
Cory Briggs runs for mayor of San Diego
Visduh: While there is truth in your statement, the reality is the “machines” behind both parties CLEARLY endorse, select, and underwrite, the office seeker who is most aligned with their views/goals. ***Ya gotta tow the party line if you want their dime.***— January 30, 2019 2:01 p.m.
Scooter riders flooding emergency rooms
Absolutely disagree! It’s the scooter company which should be held 💯 % liable for injuries, EXCEPT in cases where the operator is under the influence as defined in the vehicle code. These “vehicle’s” would disappear if the state legislature would act holding the suppliers accountable for injuries.— January 27, 2019 8:17 a.m.
