Convention Center expansion absurd
It perfectly clear. The calculus here is to confuse the electorate with talk of helping the homeless, and repairing our network of dilapidated streets. When more than $100 million will be backstopped by the taxpayers and wasted on a building with a 20% occupancy rate. And that 20% is being subsidized by the taxpayers as well. If this is such a great deal, why don’t the Hoteliers use their 2% room surcharge to fund the expansion? Why don’t they sell bonds to finance the deal? We all know the truth - The Convention Center is a money losing machine that must be subsidized with millions furnished by the politicians who obfuscate the truth from the taxpayers.— July 18, 2018 6:34 p.m.
Reporter accuses Ben Kalasho of assaulting him with dog
Kalasho ...once an ahole, ***ALWAYS*** an ahole. You won’t be rid of this ahole until you vote him out of office. And then, this ***irritating and contemptible person*** will turn up when you least want it anyway.— July 18, 2018 12:35 p.m.
Convention Center expansion absurd
The Convention Center is so under utilized now it is ridiculous. The subsidies offered to groups to entice them to come to San Diego should be considered embezzlement of the taxpayers. Mismanagement is rampant. So expanding a Center that drains the general fund to subsidize hotel millionaires makes perfect sense in San Diego. Sadly, there is only one event annually, Comic Con, that comes close to meeting the promises made when the Convention Center Complex was sold to San Diegans so many years ago. And now, in a desperate move to keep Comic Con here, it too is highly subsidized.— July 18, 2018 11:27 a.m.
Penasquitos Village empties of Filipinos
I’m NOT sorry for his situation, it is of his making. What did Almanon do for the past 45-50 years of his life? Didn’t he save for his retirement? Did he take affirmative steps to improve his situation such as gaining a skill or improving his education, or did he just ***wish*** for something better? Was it a surprise that the cost of living is considerably higher in the United States than in other parts of the world? That within the United States the cost of living is much higher in certain urban areas that other areas? He and others were given more than six months notice of this closure, did he just ignore this? I’m tired of the woe is me story. The message should be take responsibility for your life, educate yourself, better yourself and become aware of employment trends. Plan for retirement years. And most importantly, you are not entitled to anything. Society, in general, doesn’t owe you.— July 18, 2018 8:08 a.m.
Expensive kick
Good for the City of Escondido and the District Attorney’s office for going after this criminal. And let’s be clear, Davis’ inability to control himself led to a crime where he *intentionally* damaged another’s property. He should be held both criminally and civilly responsible. Sadly, in all likelihood, the taxpayers will not be able to recover the costs of the repair, but also the costs of prosecution. In addition, I suspect, we will all be paying, one way or another, for Davis’ health care, mental or otherwise. But intervention *is* necessary considering *his potential for escalating violence.* Politicians, and professionals talk about doing something mental health. Here is an opportunity to actually *do* something. Talk is cheap, let’s see what they do!— July 18, 2018 7:32 a.m.

Reports are now surfacing on the drug given to “calm” the Thai cave spelunkers. Reports, if correct, say the kids were given Ketamine. Ketamine, according to Wikipedia, is a medication mainly used for starting and maintaining anesthesia. It induces a trance-like state while providing pain relief, sedation, and memory loss. Other uses include for chronic pain and for sedation in intensive care. More importantly, heart function, breathing, and airway reflexes generally remain functional during its effects. Effects typically begin within five minutes when given by injection with the main effects lasting up to 25 minutes.— July 13, 2018 3:41 a.m.

Don: Thanks to both you and Monaghan for those kind words. While we may not always agree, I do respect the intellect, thought and consideration you put into this blog. Without knowing it, your posts challenge me to find answers to questions you provoke in me. I am embarrassed to admit my own depth of vocabulary shortcomings. Thus you force me to expand my aged mind. I have no doubt you would have be a great professor had you taken it up after retiring from the UT.— July 11, 2018 10:14 a.m.
