Nothing new about that. You can claim all you want that benefits are excessive. ================= JF, it is not a claim, it is a provenm fact. The benefits are excessive. Everyone knows that today. The only people objecting are the ones on the receiving end of the scam.— January 23, 2009 6:28 p.m.
Upgrading a Grade School
If the school is buying Macs, then the price they're getting is quite good. Remember, while you or I could buy refurbished XP boxes, the school district probably requires by policy that they buy better and newer equipment. So while you're making the point that equipment can be had for less, it's not apples to apples in this case. =================== No reason to buy Macs. In fact if education is to prepare the students for work in the real world then you not only need a Windows computer, but it is mandatory because 95% of the systems run Windows in business. As to the requirement that the district buy new ( or newer) equipement, a refurbished Dell is just that. It is warranted the same as a new one. My position is they have dinosaurs right now- systems 10 years old in a technology where 2-4 years is the norm for becoming antiquated. So ANYTHING really is a huge improvment. This is why people do not trust government IMO.— January 23, 2009 6:26 p.m.
Upgrading a Grade School
If the school is buying it, that adds more to the costs because they can usually only get stuff from pre-approved vendors. =============== The school is not buying the network system, they are raising private funds. I think the $40K is so far off base it isn't funny.— January 23, 2009 6:21 p.m.

$40K for 35 computers and 2 printers?? Are they kidding? I can purchase desktop refurbhished Dell's with Pentium 4 processors running Windows XP (they dont need ANYTHING more than this), for 190.00 per comuter INCLUDING shipping. I can pick up a good high quality refurbished workhorse HP 4050 laser printers for $100 each. Total = $6,800 and change. 85% less than $40K.— January 23, 2009 3:03 p.m.

Maybe you could tell us where we could read this fascinating history. Best, Don Bauder ================================== Here is a good start; 1- Gary Arlen Kildall (May 19, 1942 – July 11, 1994) was an American computer scientist and microcomputer entrepreneur who created the CP/M operating system and founded Digital Research, Inc. (DRI). Kildall was one of the first people to see microprocessors as fully capable computers rather than equipment controllers and to organize a company around this concept.[1] He also co-hosted the PBS TV show The Computer Chronicles. Although his career in computing spanned more than two decades, he is mainly remembered in connection with IBM's unsuccessful attempt in 1980 to license CP/M for the IBM PC. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Kildall 2- By the end of the 1970s, Apple had a staff of computer designers and a production line. The Apple II was succeeded by the Apple III in May 1980 as the company competed with IBM and Microsoft in the business and corporate computing market.[26] Jobs and several Apple employees including Jef Raskin visited Xerox PARC in December 1979 to see the Xerox Alto. Xerox granted Apple engineers three days of access to the PARC facilities in return for US$1 million in pre-IPO Apple stock.[27] Jobs was immediately convinced that all future computers would use a GUI, and development of a GUI began for the Apple Lisa.[28 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_computer— January 22, 2009 9:48 p.m.

Um, you wanted to be a cop, you became a teacher instead. So you changed your mind. Or are you saying you never wanted to be a cop in the first place? ============================== JF, how many times do I need to post this-I did the academy in between my 2 and 3 years of college-during summer. I had no intgention of applying for any LE position until I had a 4 year degree. I did not apply because I was offered a FAR BETTER job right out of college. Now, what part of that do you not understand?— January 22, 2009 6:41 p.m.

Add in a clean record. ============ Actually you do not have to have a clean record. Just no felonies. LAPD routinely hires unqualified applicants who are connected or in the pool they hire from (family, friends, military workfare etc). Many have felony arrest records, but no convictions. In fact one person recently hired by LAPD had 5 felony arrests. An arrest is really nothing more than an unprovenm accusation and should cannot be held against any applicant. Most people, the vast majority, do have clean records though.— January 22, 2009 6:38 p.m.

I simply said that obesity alone disqualifies over half the population from getting hired. ================= Are you for real???? Obesity DQ's half???....baloney. Not even 25%. For the record-I am in better shape than 99% of the people my age. I work out 6 days a week and have been for over 30 years. I must say I have put on some pounds the last 6-7 years due to my age, lower metabolic rate from age and because I cannot run....I am just too old now, but I still lift and do cardio (treadmill) basically everyday. BTW JF, in my academy we only failed one person on physical training-and it was a woman about 35 years old who could not do pull-ups.— January 22, 2009 6:33 p.m.

I agree Apple is a far more innovative company than Microsoft. But I can't vouch for the story that you tell. =============== Yeah-the background of the development of MS, Apple, The point and click mouse/Macintosh computer system.......It is all very interesting and almost completely unknown except for the hard core computer nuts (which I am not one-but do find the history so interesting).— January 22, 2009 11:30 a.m.

GED, the actual job requirements are still very selective, thus justifying the higher wages. ====================== We all know what the "job requirements" are, and if call having a GED and a clean record selective JF- all I can say is you need to lay off that whacky tobacky. As for the higher wages-there is only ONE reason- you have a monopoly, and with that monopoly you bribe elected leaders for unearned pay and benefits. If the PD and FD were opened up to outside bidding your job would drop in 75% in compensation overnight. Face it, there is no shortage of GED educated workers. In fact there is no shortage of college educated workers today.— January 22, 2009 11:24 a.m.
