Veggiejuana: an introduction to vegetarian TJ
Maybe if ex marines stopped running guns into Mexico the violence might dissipate. But if you can show me the last time a gringo got whacked while eating a vegan taco in my adopted hometown of Tijuana I'll buy you a beer in the bar of your choice. A Tijuana bar that is. Ha, ha, ha...— September 11, 2014 4:55 a.m.
Deported migrants protest in Tijuana
Funny thing about laws. Once upon a time a white man could own a black man. It was a law. Once upon a time if you were of Chinese origin you could not enter this country. It was a law. Once upon a time if you were of Japanese descent the government took you from your home and put you in a place like Manzinar. It was a law. Fortunately, demographics don't lie. History will be written by those in power and it looks like a brown sunrise on the horizon for this country. In my opinion, the law you speak of and its defenders will go down in history as another heartless, American mistake.— August 13, 2014 7:33 p.m.
San Ysidro-Tijuana terminal soon a reality
Good article. The Rodriguez(Tijuana) Airport is located halfway between the San Ysidro crossing and my place in the foothills of eastern Tijuana County. I pass by it several times a week while riding the blue and white buses to work. On Wednesday I shot a couple of clips of two awesome buskers on the bus. One played a worn but well cared for saxophone and the other a rather nice guitar. The airport and the construction going on provide the background. The crossing terminal is a wonderful plan long overdue. As for Mr Niieders being snubbed by America's finest city. That doesn't surprise me one bit since America's finest city is full of America's worst politicians.— August 8, 2014 5:22 a.m.
Comic con?
Did not the mayor of Murrietta issue a call for his constituents to resist the buses of needy children? Sorry, but after living in Murrietta I stand by my statement. History is written by the winner. Demographics don't lie. The brown tide is rising and racist hamlets like Escondido, Murrietta and Ramona will go down in history as cancerous pustules of intolerance. And rightfully so.— August 2, 2014 5:15 a.m.
Comic con?
A little over a decade ago, I purchased two condominiums in Murrieta. One on Via Princesa and one in the Verona complex. My plan was to live in one and rent the other. I lasted about three months then left. I found Murrieta to be full of San Diegans who don't like minorities. That was why they left dago and headed north up the 15. The residents there had very subtle ways of making you feel uncomfortable. For instance, when I walked into a store, the clerks often would wait for me to speak. At first I didn't understand this until I saw a rare Spanish speaking customer enter. The clerks definitely treated them different. Of course this all took place over a decade ago and I'm sure Murrieta has progressed since then(Tongue in cheek). As for Hermosillo, when I was growing up a militant Chicano in 1970's East LA, he would have been called a Tio Taco or a coconut. Viva La Raza Cozmica!— July 25, 2014 5:06 a.m.
Faulconer names SD's first female police chief
Two stories recently appeared on the same local news broadcast. One was the Shelly Zimmerman story. The other was of a border patrol agent named Michael Flanders. Agent Flanders had gone public with civil rights violations being committed by his fellow agents at the I-8 checkpoint against his fellow American citizens. By doing so this brave young man was removed from duty at that post (while those he accused of misconduct remain). He also no doubt ruined his career in homeland security. Visduh and Ponzi were right on with their assessment. Zimmerman should have remained interim chief until a larger search was conducted. I'd of started with a guy like Michael Flanders.— March 8, 2014 8:12 a.m.
SENTRI pass border-crossers frustrated
What I want to know is why the agents who act like the biggest a-holes never seem to be wearing a name tag. II once asked a particularly crude agent what his name was and he said to call him officer. Hell of a way to treat a fellow American.— March 8, 2014 5:18 a.m.
SENTRI pass border-crossers frustrated
SENTRI and READY are just two gimmicks by the feds to squeeze more money out of the folks crossing into the US. I cross regularly by foot using the GENERAL PUBLIC lane and I see the frustration on the faces of those in the other two lanes. Sometimes I cross faster. If the feds really wanted to speed up the process they would utilize more of the officers who are standing around with their arms folded when you enter. Or maybe they shouldn't waste so many agent hours by placing half a dozen agents and a dog at the Mexico entrance. All I ever see them doing is profiling us.— March 7, 2014 5:33 a.m.
Extremes: The Life and Times of Father José Maria Zalvidea
"*Zaldivia appointed native Alcaldes to act as judges and enforce punishments. HE CHOSE THE LAZIEST ONES. Reid says because they would* *"Take more pleasure in making others work than would the industrious ones!"* San Diego hasn't changed very much has it?— February 28, 2014 5:28 a.m.
Tijuana Revisited, Part 1
There are some dozen or so bus companies plying their trade in Tijuana. The blue and whites are amongst the best maintained and modern. I use them regularly to take the airport route to my palacial wooden shack in the foothills of eastern TJ. Right now the blue and whites are battling with two other companies that have pirated their routes. It's very different from San Diego where the MTS (Miserably Terrible Service) holds sway. Sometimes its better and sometimes it isn't.— August 13, 2012 12:24 p.m.
