Fred Williams said "The religious people KILL us. Non-believers are easy going, live-and-let-live folk." Fred, that's horse crap. You may be easy going and live-and-let-live, but JOSEPH FREAKING STALIN wasn't! He was the most powerful anti-religious, atheistic man in history, and the most murderous. Hitler -- another anti-religionist, by the way -- was an amateur in comparison. Stalin killed between 50 and 100 million people. The other atheistic communist regimes of the world have killed countless millions more. And why not? If there's no God, and therefore no objective system of morality -- only Darwin's murky theory of evolution -- why not kill 100 million people to achieve your political ends?— May 26, 2009 12:39 p.m.
Zirk Ubu, a San Diego’s alternative circus troupe
Zirk Ubu couldn't have written better PR themselves. Thomas Lux, as he proclaims himself, is a poet. As such, we can presume that he has the idea beauty in mind and close to his heart. I'd go one further and say, as a poet, he ought to be a defender of beauty. And here he is chronicling a group that aggressively blurs the line between beauty and ugliness. Seems like a recipe for some journalistic fireworks, or at least a few challenging questions, right? But Lux gave us readers none of that. Instead he got completely sucked in by these "nutcakes" and wrote a gooey promo piece. Shame on Lux for not performing his journalistic duties.— May 26, 2009 12:04 p.m.

Maybe KUSI thought a quickie segment on a light and breezy Sunday morning news show wasn't enough time, nor the right venue to hash out the intricacies of the transgender question. I can't say I blame them. As this thread shows, it's a tough issue with very strong views, opinions, and emotions mixed in with the facts. Wow, The Reader tapped a rich commenting vein with this one. Is it just me or does the Barbi lady in the video seem kind of sad. She mentioned that her deceased mom gave her Barbi dolls when she was a kid. If I were a psychology student, I'd write a thesis on poor Barbi lady. Funny story: I have a couple of friends who are first class Disney dorks. They've never been to Club 33. I, who don't give a crap about Disney, HAVE been to Club 33. Twice. {A friend of mine worked for a big OC law firm that had a membership.} When I told my Disney dork friends about this, they were hysterical with envy and couldn't stand the irony, that I, a Disney indifferent, had been to Club 33 while they, Disney Kool-Aid drinkers, hadn't.— February 27, 2009 4:11 p.m.

Another free pass from Duncan to the Coen Brothers. When other movie makers go "Back to the well once more," you criticize them for it. But old Ethan and Joel get a pat on the back. (Plus a friendly slap on the butt for their left wing ideology.) I remember you used to think Goerge Clooney among the worst actors on earth... but wait, he was in a Cohen Bros. movie. And, what do you know, he's not so bad after all. At least try not to sound like a shill for these guys, Duncan. I understand that your job requires you to swim in the torrent of sewage that flows south from Hollywood, and therefore talent like the Coens' must seem like a clean refreshing mountain stream.
