Delivering babies used to be an art that OBs were proud to practice. Now, fear of malpractice suits has made them afraid to do anything but the easy, quick births after easy quick labors. On a personal note, when my son was born at Mary Birch, after a mildly tricky delivery, my wife's OB -- who still practices the art of delivering babies -- whispered in my wife's ear, "I'm glad I got here. The on-call doctor would have had you in surgery for sure." How a Hospital that is so quick to slice open women can call itself a hospital for women is beyond me.— December 14, 2011 2:13 p.m.

Can you trust people to cook for you when they spell Reuben as Reuban. The latter sounds like pesticide, or sunblock, or birth control, or something. Then there's "Pastured Liver." Beethoven 9th: Bigger than Christmas
I was good with your list until the Magic Flute. I think it's one of Mozart's sillier works. Pretty at times, but mostly pretty silly. If you had said Mozart's Requiem, I'd not have quibbled. I'll quibble with the Mona Lisa, too. It's interesting because of the famous smirk. (Sister Wendy believes she's smirking at Da Vinci because she senses his homosexuality and consequent inability to understand her feminine nature.) But is it a contender for pinnacle of European culture. I think not. Now Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling, that is a very strong contender. Speaking of Michealangelo, his Moses and Pieta are superior to the David. Brothers Karamazov... no quibbles, though not my personal favorite. You have painting, music, and literature, and sculpture on the list of contenders. Why no architecture? May I propose St. Peter's square and basilica?— December 7, 2011 11:27 a.m.

Dreaming in Craigslist
Craigslist and other online jobs forums should be about 15-20% of your strategy. Networking is the key. Have you called any old friends who have good jobs? Have you called old bosses? Sit down and write out a list of the people you know? Then ask yourself, how many of these people know that I'm looking for a job and know what my qualifications are. You don't have to be a pain to your friends. Simply tell them what's up, ask if they know of anything, and if they can give you a name and a number or email address. Feel free to consider yourself an idiot if you wear anything, mustache included, ironically. What's the irony? "I'm cool but I'm wearing an uncool shirt?" I'm sorry, that's not irony. Irony is you very self consciously dressing like all of your friends -- skinny pants, t-shirt a size too small, mustache, tattoo, bangs, et al -- drinking PBR like all your friends, listening to Wilco like all your friends, going to Dive bars like all your friends, riding a fixie like all your friends, then believing yourself to be a non-conformist.
