Sweet Gums and Sycamores
There are extensive eucalyptus groves in Scripps Ranch, UCSD campus, and Rancho Santa Fe, to name a few prominent places where they now grow. They're an Australian import. Tall palm trees on Capricorn? I haven't seen those ... but generally palm trees are flexible (they are more like overgrown "grass" than conventional trees) and not many fall over in the wind. Check out all those really tall palms lining the streets in Beverly Hills, for example. They don't topple over much.— November 20, 2009 3:02 p.m.
Leonid Meteor Shower
For best meteor-watching results, you really need to be east of Alpine or Ramona. Sunrise Highway in the Laguna Mountains is a great spot, and it's only 45 minutes freeway drive east of central San Diego. The Leonids really don't get going until after 10 p.m. and they tend to increase in number toward dawn. What does that mean for Sunrise Highway at this time of year? Really, really warm clothes, or a warm sleeping bag!— November 16, 2009 4:28 p.m.
