I'm a long time Girl Scout Nan...not only do I safeguard matches, but they're waterproof. ;) Thank you for the poem, I love it. Like your blog title I consider my poetry 'throwaway'. I put it out there, if it means something it does, if it doesn't, at least it's out of my head. One less thing rattling around in here anyway. I'm not suicidal. I love life. But I know that feeling. And I didn't realize until recently that I'm basically doing the same thing to myself. Inadvertent abuse. Pain is like fire. Very cleansing. Without pain we'd never know beauty. After all, it's how we are all born. Miracles happen in the blinding pain of birth/rebirth.— June 27, 2011 6:40 p.m.

Oh gosh Nan. I wish I could. People tell me I should ask them to get a hotel room. But I just can't... do that to my dad. Although he's the one who married her... it's just really sad. I finally realized she doesn't do it *on purpose*; this is really just the way she is. That makes it easier to circumnavigate. At least I don't take it personal anymore ;)— June 27, 2011 9:26 a.m.

What?! Defending Barbie but I notice Grimm's doesn't get the same? Where is your sense of history!? Thanks Blue. It's always scary putting it out there. Most people around me give the vacant stare when I get up the nerve to torture them with my words. And then there is comprehension. What I mean doesn't exactly translate all that often. My dear, dear husband says quite frankly that he understands nothing I write. Thanks Nan. There is, for sure, the feeling of wanting "everything" and having to sacrifice something in order for everything to work. It's tempting to crinkle my eyes and giggle but I'd just as soon trip myself. I was trying to capture the paradox of 'not quite'. There is more truth to this writing than I'd like to admit.— June 22, 2011 7:54 p.m.

Hi Mindy, It's easy to be misunderstood/misinterpreted online. I don't mean to come down on you, but I feel it's a cop-out to say big dogs sometimes hurt little ones. My aunt has pit-bulls who live in perfect existence with her many cats and they have always been wonderful around my small child even though they had never been around children before. Good owner = good dog. Regardless of breed. I think it's counter-intuitive to say that pits are not a bad breed and then say that their "instinct" is to prey on smaller animals (including children!?). I think statements like that; by people like you who profess to be good with pit bulls; that make people afraid of the breed. After all if you; a person who is good with the breed, cannot offer even a modicum of assurance that pits are gentle...— January 15, 2011 8:01 p.m.

Ah, I can see how that happened SP. I think Pits get a bad name because any dog that "looks like a pit" and does something bad gets thrown into the same category. That, and comments like Mindy's: "Pit bulls and many other breeds that were historically used for hunting, tend to be high in prey drive. That means that if they see a small dog or very young child, they can mistake it for prey and kill it and then people who don't educate themselves consider that to be a dangerous dog." Any dog who makes the mistake of killing a very young child because it thinks that child is prey is a dangerous dog. When someone mistakenly asserts this is an inherent characteristic of Pits, it's understandable that people would not want Pits anywhere near their neighborhood. To combat prejudice against a particular breed of dog I believe the best thing to do is ensure your personal representation of the species is well trained and behaved. It's hard for someone to retain their mistaken belief that "all" Pit Bulls are bad dogs when someone is standing in front of you being loved up by your sweet dog. On the other hand, screaming that ones dog will kill another dog at a dog park is one way to perpetuate the myth that Pits are dog-killers and dangerous.— January 15, 2011 9:43 a.m.

Hi SurfPuppy, I don't understand what Pit Bulls have to do with Chihuahuas. I was making the point that any dog can be aggressive and frightening, even the little yappy ones that I outweigh several times over. I agree with you that Pit Bulls are a great breed. I frequently allow my daughter to play with my aunt's Pit Bulls; they are loving, wonderful pets (to my amusement one occasionally tries to sit all 60-70lbs of herself in my lap). I have owned ridge backs and German Shepards and some people think of these dogs as inherently dangerous. In general, I feel a dog is only as dangerous as their owner.— January 14, 2011 9:20 a.m.
