Adventures in Adobada: Tacos El Paisa
I, too, am headed to to Chulajuana for a few things. You're right that peeps overlook CJ though. It's too damn far away for most of the Reader's core audience and staffers, but there are grinds down there worth driving for. If you've got more tips, share them! We all have email address on the website here. I, for one, try to do well about hitting up the places that readers tip me off on.

Gah! Ugh.
So, you mention how the kids question kind of went unnoticed by you guys, which raises an important Q: at what point in any relationship do you bring such a deal breaker up? It seems perverse to do it early on, but you can't just wait forevs to drop that bombshell. I mean, sooner or later it's gonna come up, right?

Mullet revolution
Vive le mullet!
— December 11, 2013 7:26 p.m.
Gah! Ugh.
Matthew Alice has informed us that technically, "indecent exposure" is a very specific crime and must necessarily involve deliberate, sexual intent. Showing the world a boob isn't indecent exposure unless the boob-flasher is totally getting off on it and victimizing someone in some way.
— December 9, 2013 7:59 p.m.
Gah! Ugh.
I have taken shit for not wanting kids. It's just what happens when you make the decision not to breed. Even lost a girlfriend over the hypothetical kids she might have (maybe) someday thought about having, even though she was only "pretty sure" at the time! I've got my own reasons for never wanting to do it, but I sure don't look to anyone else to justify them. By the same token, I take short shrift with people who want to cram baby pictures into my face and be all like, "ooooh like at this little critter that I grew in my uterus!" It's amazing, in the same way that all biological phenomena are amazing, but I resent being expected to admire someone's ability to make a baby. Like, seriously, guppies can do it. Guppies. The funny thing is, whether or not to procreate becomes this really weird line along which to divide people and it's definitely not a this or that subject. People's opinions on the subject are *highly* individualized. Anecdote one: I have a friend who rants and raves about how he is "never having kids," yet talks about his plans to, like, foster and adopt a whole basketball team at some point in life. To me, it seems like he makes an arbitrary and really pretty ridiculous distinction between what amounts to exactly the same thing. Kids are pretty much the same to me, regardless of who's DNA floats in their cell nuclei. Anecdote two: I remember making fun of one of my friends and calling her a "breeder" for having this whole grip of kids. It's kind of funny, because she's as much lesbian as one could be (spiky crewcut and cargo shorts fuhreallllz), and the gay crowd used to have exclusive domain over the term "breeder," using it as a mildly derogatory term for us straight folks. I threw the term at her with more than a hint of irony, natch. Now, I almost feel like straight people who don't want kids are more in the "weird camp" than gay peeps! What a wild world, huh? I'm willing to bet that childlessness and atheism are the two biggest social stumbling blocks in the urban world these days. That, and being female. Misogyny remains the king of discrimination in our enlightened age, but that's a different tale entirely.

All Things BBQ: the Wrangler Family Barbecue
Mr. Rice, I had no idea you were connected to this magnificent institution of barbecue greatness. Half a dozen of my friends turned down my invitation to drive out to east county and eat here for the purposes of All Things BBQ. I personally informed them all that they missed out on a true highlight of my eating year. You should have heard the message I left on my friend's cell. I was so smitten that I had to call somebody and vocalize my entranced state of smokey blissfulness.

RB Sushi invades Hillcrest
I've been there before. My experience ranks it below RB, but above Sushi Deli and much less likely to incur an endless wait.

Sunny Donuts and the incoming Dunkin's
You know, it remains to be seen. There isn't a major coffee chain out there that hasn't suffered the pangs of overzealous expansion. The Krispy Kreme collapse of the mid-2000's is a dramatic example, but even Starbucks had to shutter franchises in some markets. They didn't expect the loyalty to Dunkin's, or TH, or wherever people get their AM brew! Dunkin' Donuts franchise requirements are very stiff. Anyone looking to open one or more Dunk's has to demonstrate significant financial liquidity or it's no dice. The operators of the Dunkin's in SD will be sharp businesspeople, able to weather the hardships of breaking into a new(ish) market. I foresee success for Dunkin' Donuts in California as the next decade or so rolls on.

Fried clams and lobster rolls at Bite of Boston
Negatory. "Soft-shell clam" is the most technically correct name for the abundant clams along the eastern seaboard. They have a handful of other common names though, like "Ipswich clams" and "steamer clams." All are acceptable!
— November 25, 2013 8:45 a.m.
All Things BBQ: BBQ House
Good story about the place in the Rag, Mercy. I've been wanting to do an extended BBQ feature for about six months and it's finally happening now. Stay tuned, as there's much more 'cue to come!

I, for one, try to do well about hitting up the places that readers tip me off on.— December 11, 2013 8:08 p.m.
Gah! Ugh.
So, you mention how the kids question kind of went unnoticed by you guys, which raises an important Q: at what point in any relationship do you bring such a deal breaker up? It seems perverse to do it early on, but you can't just wait forevs to drop that bombshell. I mean, sooner or later it's gonna come up, right?— December 11, 2013 7:38 p.m.
Mullet revolution
Vive le mullet!— December 11, 2013 7:26 p.m.
Gah! Ugh.
Matthew Alice has informed us that technically, "indecent exposure" is a very specific crime and must necessarily involve deliberate, sexual intent. Showing the world a boob isn't indecent exposure unless the boob-flasher is totally getting off on it and victimizing someone in some way.— December 9, 2013 7:59 p.m.
Gah!
Misogyny remains the king of discrimination in our enlightened age, but that's a different tale entirely.— December 9, 2013 7:55 p.m.
I was so smitten that I had to call somebody and vocalize my entranced state of smokey blissfulness.— December 9, 2013 7:32 p.m.
RB Sushi invades Hillcrest
I've been there before. My experience ranks it below RB, but above Sushi Deli and much less likely to incur an endless wait.— December 5, 2013 3:41 p.m.
I foresee success for Dunkin' Donuts in California as the next decade or so rolls on.— November 25, 2013 8:51 a.m.
Fried clams and lobster rolls at Bite of Boston
Negatory. "Soft-shell clam" is the most technically correct name for the abundant clams along the eastern seaboard. They have a handful of other common names though, like "Ipswich clams" and "steamer clams." All are acceptable!— November 25, 2013 8:45 a.m.
All Things BBQ: BBQ House
Good story about the place in the Rag, Mercy. I've been wanting to do an extended BBQ feature for about six months and it's finally happening now. Stay tuned, as there's much more 'cue to come!— November 22, 2013 7:04 a.m.
