Places to Play and Pray

There's always Mission Gorge. Taking that walk early in the morning might be all you need. I'm talking about Mission Trails Park but the section near the visitor center, not the Santee side.

Rosenkavalier

Joseph, I should say the costumes and set design are from the Vienna of the 18th Century. It is interesting that, to my knowledge, there have been no updated productions of Der Rosenkavalier--I'm getting that from the director of the current SDO production and haven't verified it.

Joseph, I am saddened that you took my response to be condescending, it was not my intention. I am familiar with Krauss and Hanslick but you are correct in saying that I am not an expert in the field. Although, I think I'll take your recommendation and check out The Red Count. I am aware that Mozart and Schubert were Austrian but the comment you are referring to was a quotation of Wilhelm Furtwangler. I am always pleased to converse with anyone who actively educates them self beyond the popular media. One of the challenges of writing for a daily or weekly publication is that the writing is for immediate consumption. There are a few articles I've read over the years that have stuck with me but for the most part they are here today gone tomorrow.

Propaganda or Preservation?

RJS, I love your comment. I also respect that you signed your full name, thank you. I think stories like Furtwangler's are intriguing--see my comment under Das Wunder for more on that. I know there is a play and a movie about his trial after the war called "Taking Sides". I've yet to see it but should probably bump it up to the top of my list. I love Furtwangler's philosophy of conducting. He consciously kept his orchestra guessing because he didn't want a black and white, cut and dry performance. There is a story about The Berlin Philharmonic getting together to surprise Furtwangler with the crispness of their entrance on a specific piece of music. They all agreed to take their cue off of the concert master since Furtwangler was always too vague. They pulled it off but Furtwangler made no comment and continued the rehearsal as is nothing had happened. Slowly they all stopped playing and then asked what the maestro had thought of their attack. He replied something along of the lines of, "It was all together too obvious." Respectfully, Garrett

Hi JosephVann, Thank you for the comment--you bring up some very good points. I would agree that this post is more of a musing. I wasn't trying to determining if vK was a good guy or a bad guy. I also wasn't interested in determining if Furtwangler was a good guy or not. Those two posts were intended to provide some superficial information about two, enormously influential conductors who stayed in Germany during the third reich. I'm pleased that someone cares enough about the topic to comment and to also go a little deeper into the issue. That vK's own ancestry may have endangered him is one possible reason for him making sure he was reinstated in 1939. Why he married the daughter of a rich, half Jewish man in 1942 is interesting because the man in question survived the war. Did vK do it and use his influence to shield his wife and father-in-law or did his father-in-law offer him financial "assistance" to marry his daughter in the first place? We don't know. What intrigues me is the tension between the policies of the third reich and the artists that stayed. The conductors that left are kind of a boring story. Otto Klemperer left and went to Los Angeles to conduct. Yawn. It was a necessary move for Klemperer and I admire him for it but that's really the end of the story--except that his son played the role of Colonel Klink on Hogan's Heros with the stipulation that Klink would never have the upper hand at the end of any episode. There are no good guys or bad guys. To place people into these two categories is a temptation that we would be better served to resist. Regarding your question, "Has something formally called "Anti-Semitism" ever existed as a formal political movement or party, that is, as a separate entity with something called "anti-semitism" as a central program for structuring the whole of political life?" The answer is no. However, we would be hard pressed to find any issue that is a central program for structuring the whole of political life. Certainly not freedom--maybe oil. If you want to investigate more into the politics of hate, look up Karl Lueger and the Austirain version of the Christian Social Party. Also look for Edouard Drumant and the Anti-Semitic League of France. While Antisemitism wasn't the central theme for these political movements, it was certainly present. BTW, check out the post from October called Goat Love, it's about Night on the Bald Mountain and how it's based on Russian, witch-women having sex with goats that are supposed to be possessed by Satan.
