Bridgepoint Education revenue, profits fall
"I remember the former head of the Chamber of Commerce telling some local publication that the San Diego business community was proud of Bridgepoint. That's all you have to know about the San Diego business community." Bridgepoint executives are also quite cozy with elected officials in San Diego...the newest member of the board of supervisors proudly posted a picture of himself with a Bridgepoint lobbyist on Facebook. When I posted a link to some of the stories about Bridgepoint, my comments were erased. These political prostitutes aren't ignorant of what's going on...they're deliberately turning a blind eye because they like the campaign contributions.— March 13, 2013 10:52 p.m.
Confidential email reveals Irwin Jacobs's powerful hand in Balboa Park project
Those who call Jacobs a "philanthropist" should be prohibited from calling themselves journalists. When will San Diego learn? John Moores played the same game, spreading his stolen money around town to position himself to steal yet more money. He was called a "philanthropist" too. Jacobs should be ashamed of his behavior...but his whole career is a series of lies, maneuvering to use public money for his own enrichment. I'd sure like to see a Reader cover story about his history...how he turned someone else's work into his own private company, using public funding. How he worked his employees like dogs to get the first chips made, then fired them and shipped the jobs overseas so he could avoid sharing the profits...how he continues to abuse the H1B visa system...how much money he has injected into political issues from getting the stadium naming rights for a pittance, trying to subvert the election of the school board, and on and on...— March 13, 2013 10:30 p.m.
Ex-Sanders aide gets $6,000 a month for Balboa Park centennial role
The more Randy writes, the more he proves my assertions about lazy, myopic, and sloppy San Diego journalists who are too cowed to be courageous. Notice how Randy won't write about the sole subject he might actually know something about...how VOSD slants its coverage to benefit its benefactors.— February 19, 2013 4:02 a.m.

Thanks Monaghan...didn't know about the Detroit writer.— February 19, 2013 3:58 a.m.
Ex-Sanders aide gets $6,000 a month for Balboa Park centennial role
Randy reports to the Daily Planet early on Monday morning. Proud never to work on spec, he is eager for The Chief to give his orders: "Randy, give me a thousand words or so on Batman and how he's destroying the moral fabric of Gotham. Be sure to be 'balanced' and quote both sides of the controversy. Oh, and get the Riddler's comments. Good boy. Go now." "Right away, Chief!" Randy scrambles to his cubicle, cranks the random insult generator, and sets to work. Hours later: "Holy Hemorrhagic Hagiography!" "What is it Robin?" "A hack is saying you're a no good so-and-so, and that you have bad breath too, and that you can't sing very well at all." (With apologies to Bob Kane!)— February 16, 2013 12:14 a.m.
TV and video games may intensify violence
NaturalBorn...I think there is some substitution effect. They don't play video games "until they actually commit their crimes". Rather, they play video games INSTEAD of committing crimes. Police and other sociologists will tell you that some crime is committed simply out of boredom. Give young males engrossing entertainment and they won't be committing crimes. So maybe video games actually PREVENT crime? Think about it...— February 15, 2013 11:53 p.m.
San Diego's convention center expansion would build into a glut
Building this ugly expansion would be an epic mistake. A wholly unwarranted investment into a declining market...catching a falling knife. Doing so would prove that the city spends money so unwisely that it cannot be trusted with public funds. The hotel owners, builders, developers and labor groups who fund political races in San Diego are behind this fraud. They're also the ones who fund VOSD, and own the UT. So the writers at those two outlets won't take a strong stand against this financial disaster in the making. (Let's all hope to see them prove me wrong on this...)— February 15, 2013 11:40 p.m.
"Mayor Mo" stole $2 million from late husband's foundation
This whole situation makes me sad. Mayor O'Connor was better than most. Why didn't any of the local reporters, many of whom have indicated they knew about her gambling, ever write about this? Yes, it would be invading her privacy...but she's a public figure, and someone who held a role overseeing an important trust. Perhaps the embarrassment would have persuaded her to get help. Now it's all come out any way, and she seems a broken woman. And yet the situation also angers me...medical marijuana patients, as gravely ill as Mayor Mo, are sent to prison to suffer and die in a cell. An embezzler of a trust gets deferred prosecution. Dumanis and Duffy have some explaining to do about this double standard.— February 15, 2013 11:34 p.m.
Capitol Hill's top two personal debtors hail from San Diego, analysis finds
Yes. Democrat/Republican...makes little difference. It's really about being an insider or outsider. In this way, Peters and Issa are indistinguishable. Both wealthy insiders who bought public office in spite of their records. Some would say this is a good thing, since it means that wealthy and powerful interests cannot "buy" them. But it's clear that their interests are ALREADY aligned with wealth and existing power structures, so there's no need.— February 15, 2013 11:29 p.m.
Ex-Sanders aide gets $6,000 a month for Balboa Park centennial role
In all sincerity, I used "pansy" mostly for alliteration. "Randy is puffed up, proud of himself, but really he's a pansy. Look at what he writes professionally, and you can see that it's not very impressive." Hear those popping "p"s populating the paragraph? I might have used popinjay, but it doesn't really fit...I wanted something to denote shrinking weakness. Puerile might be preferable, but still not perfect. People who pander to the plutocrats...fragile petunias? Pansy was the word and I stand by the choice. As to your surplus or dearth of gayness...not really relevant to your writing regarding politics, unless it gives you a boy crush on glory seeking toadies on the council. Then again, is this the set up for your new distraction, the "Fred's a bigot and used anti gay language..." attack? It would be amusing to slap that one around. If I wanted to use gay language, I'd call you a "bottom" for your sugar daddies, or perhaps suggest that your knees are dirty and you need to brush your teeth after a visit with the local gentry. But I didn't write anything like that. It would be fun, but irrelevant to the discussion. Let's get back to the main point...mediocre San Diego journalists and insiders selling out to the oligarchs. Homo-erotic imagery aside, (disgraced City Manager Jack McGrory getting cornholed by John Moores) there is so much to cover in San Diego...real news that deserves to be reported. But to preserve access to power, the journalists report what they're told...without checking up the facts. Take the example of the Convention Center expansion, and the City Auditor's report finding the projections of income are ridiculous, and dangerous to the city's financing plans. Aside from Don Bauder, who is covering this? If it is covered, why do you insist on being "fair and balanced" and then offering some insider's ridiculous response defending the erroneous estimates (I'm thinking Bob Nelson) as equally valid? Truth tellers and liars are equal in journalists eyes. And as is evident from our amusing exchange, you decide who is telling the truth by demeanor alone. If someone is polite and charming, complimenting you and your tribe, they are believable. If someone is rude and treats you with disdain...they must be a liar, huh? Some great reporting there, Randy...— February 15, 2013 11:04 p.m.
