Seaside Courier debuts in North County
Madaffer is bad news. I remember sitting with him back in 1993 and listening to him brag about getting money from the city for his newspaper. He put it in his wife's name, then used her status as a "minority" to get a grant from the taxpayers. He said it was $50,000. This isn't hearsay. I was there...flabbergasted. So was Pat Arter (later ran for College Board) and Bob Trettin (later ran for Assembly). From that day onward I knew his character was deeply flawed, and when I was later offered an internship at the city working under him, I refused it.— November 8, 2013 9 p.m.
Lousy Sacramento Kings closer to getting new arena
Does anyone still believe that the government is run for the benefit of the governed? Sports and entertainment is subsidized, consumption encouraged, with the revenue from these optional activities accumulated into a few greedy hands. The media is closely connected to the sports teams, which provide content, access to stories, and advertising revenue to the same outlets urging public subsidies for the moguls. These same moguls have more than enough politicians and their staff in their pockets (look at how many free tickets are doled out to our "public servants" in disclosure reports...let's all pretend those don't affect decisions). It's like the public innocently goes to the bar to watch the game, gets slipped some "roofies", wakes up injured and humiliated...and the perpetrators of the rape snort and high five, selling the television rights. Ugly.— November 1, 2013 10:07 p.m.
San Diego overlords and unions — who can stop them?
In San Diego, it's not Republican v. Democrat, or South of I-8 versus North... It's Insiders versus Outsiders. Thank you to people like Brian Peterson who has fought for so many years to give the outsiders a glimpse of what is happening behind closed doors, and to unite so many in the fight against corruption San Diego style.— October 2, 2013 8:24 a.m.
Constituent says Mayor Filner sexually harassed her at monthly meet and greet event
If Dorian Hargrove interviews a woman he knows from his previous reporting work, gets details, and reports them... ...my previous support of Filner, all the while acknowledging he's a huge jerk who I personaly dislike, is now wavering. I don't trust hacks like Dotinga or the drones at the UT, but I do respect the work of Mr. Hargrove. Let's see more details and specifics of the allegations. It's not looking good for Bob Filner. That's a tragedy for San Diego, because we know who will take his place.— July 15, 2013 12:42 p.m.
In wake of scandal, Mayor Filner to propose new Weak Mayor guidelines
The new Weak And Inoffensive Mayor Program (WIMP) is the model for future leadership for our country. Just imagine if we had a Congress that would allow big banks and speculators to write financial laws. What WIMPs! Or if the Supreme Court were to say Corporations are People, while whittling down the 4th amendment to a twig...that would be WIMPish. But nobody could imagine an Executive Branch that would spy on its own citizens, execute without trial those it deems "enemies", and continue to militarize the police...such a situation would be totally WIMPy. So starting it out in San Diego is a great start. By emasculating and humiliating any office holder who dares to transgress against accepted corporate norms, and the best interests of the Chamber of Commerce, we can finally have the bright happy future we all deserve. Thank you, Mr. Mencken, for reporting this welcome news.— July 12, 2013 12:15 p.m.
Bob Filner raises big political cash from NFL owner
So interesting...what if more reporters actually took the time to examine public records, do a bit of cross referencing, and wrote up the results. Matt Potter is an example to the lame gossip columnists posing as reporters in San Diego, that sadly few will emulate because it involves doing kinda not fun things like reading diffcult text and thinking hard...putting things together.— July 12, 2013 12:05 p.m.
While FBI Ferrets, Filner Files Forms
So Filner returned the money...but Top Cop Gore did not?— July 12, 2013 11:59 a.m.
Sex scandal and secrecy nothing new at benighted San Diego city hall
Don, if I were but you and should perchance encounter such an insulting dullard on the byway, I'd rap him smartly across the noggin with my walking stick and say, "fey and begone, you insufferable cad"...but I'm nowhere near the gentleman you are, so I'll just point out his many professional failings in online comments.— July 12, 2013 11:46 a.m.
Big people talk about issues; small people talk about people

Big people talk about issues; small people talk about people
Ponzi, that is a good summation. What I dread, but have already accepted, is that what Briggs has to say is true. While Filner has done good work upsetting the apple cart of the powers that be, he's simultaneously participated in the same old wheeling and dealing that has made San Diego infamous. That's worthy of resignation, or worse...but the focus should extend to the city council, former mayors and others as well. When I saw that skulking miscreants like Fred Maas (how I hate that he sullies our shared peaceable name) where attending Filner's fundraisers, I felt the bile rise in my throat. (Thanks for reporting that Matt Potter.) I've recounted more than enough times my own personal encounters with Filner, and how revolting his behavior can be. I still support his agenda of challenging the oligarchs downtown, and he's done more than I expected. Now his agressive, myopic, narcistic, and power-perverted behavior is going to sabotage all he's accomplished, and all we hoped for? I hope not. But it sure would be typical of San Diego to endure just this fate, and see a subservient lackey of the oligarchs take over and doom the city to further failure.— July 12, 2013 10 a.m.
