Dr. Payne is Adjunct Flute Professor/Assistant Lecturer of Music History, Emeritus at San Diego State University, Grossmont & Mesa Colleges. She played Principal Flute with the San Diego Chamber Orchestra, San Diego Philharmonic Woodwind Quintet, was Director of Winds & Brass at the California Institute of Music & has conducted the San Diego’s Civic Youth Wind Ensemble, SDSU & Silver Whistles Flute Choirs. Dr. Payne founded "Music West, School for Young Flutists" & co-founded “San Diego Coastal Flutes.” Ever committed to pedagogy, September served as President of San Diego Flute Guild & belongs to numerous musical societies: Moyse Society, National Flute Association, The California Music Teachers Association, Mu Phi Epsilon, Kappa Phi & writes research & pedagogical articles for musical newsletters. Studio locations: Carmel Valley, Rancho Bernardo & San Diego.
Dr. Payne performed solo recitals throughout Canada, US & Europe & with Colorado & Aspen, Banff Festival Orchestras, & the Boston Opera Co. Her education includes a (MM) degree from Boston University & a (DMA) Doctor of Musical Arts from Rice University. Her mentors include the greatest artist of the 20th & 21st C, in both the French & American style of flute playing: Marcel Moyse, Jean- Pierre Rampal, Sir James Galway, Geoffrey Gilbert, Albert Tipton, Leone Buyse and Carol Wincenc. Dr. Payne has recorded for NCM in NY & is a specialist in Contemporary Canadian flute music, writing Canada’s 1st Catalogue of Contemporary Canadian Flute Music.
