Navy man found guilty of 21 felonies by San Diego jury
Update: sentencing was delayed until last Friday, September 20, 2013. Jesus Alejandro Solorzano, 38, was sentenced to 114 years in prison by San Diego Superior Court Judge Kathleen Lewis. “The judge called the defendant’s actions ‘reprehensible,’” prosecutor Tracy Prior reported. Solorzano was found guilty of repeatedly abusing a young girl who was in his care, for years. Prosecutor Tracy Prior said "this is the worst of the worst of betrayal." The victim, now a young woman, spoke to the judge before sentencing last week. Deputy District Attorney Tracy Prior reported that the victim has been able to find “closure” thanks to the successful prosecution. Prior stated that the former "victim" has concentrated on her schoolwork and graduated “top of her class, and is studying to be a doctor at USD.” “Justice was served in this case,” the prosecutor said.

Shoots neighbor on Lone Jack Road in Encinitas
Update: at the conclusion of a hearing September 23, 2013, the judge found sufficient evidence to order Vilkin to stand trial on both charges, murder and assault. Honorable Judge Sim von Kalinowski heard testimony from the two hired workers whom Vilkin had brought with him to the property that morning, last March. The workers both said they heard Vilkin arguing with shooting victim John Upton, and they suggested it was Vilkin who was loud and cursing. The judge commented, "The argument was one-sided..."

Encinitas filmmaker killed in shooting
Update: a judge ordered Vilkin to stand trial on charges of murder and assault with a deadly weapon at the conclusion of a hearing September 23, 2013, in San Diego's North County Superior Courthouse. According to testimony, Vilkin brought two workers to his property about 8 a.m. the day of the shooting, last March. Both workers testified in court with the aid of a Spanish speaking interpreter. The men said Michael Vilkin hired them to cut small trees and shrubbery along a fenceline, and the men were ear-witnesses to the shooting. Both workers said that the shooting victim, John Upton, first came to them and offered to move a car that was parked near the plants they were cutting. Then Upton walked down the pathway towards Vilkin, where he soon died.

Encinitas shooting victim might have tried to block the bullet
The girlfriend of the man who was shot to death, Evelyn Zeller, testified at a hearing on September 23, 2013. She said of John Upton, "He was my partner, my boyfriend...two and a half years." Zeller said she was walking around their rented home that morning, looking for Upton, when she heard shots outside. Zeller said she went outside and saw a man lying on the ground some distance away and started walking in that direction, but didn't recognize John Upton until she was just feet away. "I saw him lying in his blood." Evelyn Zeller said she didn't notice Michael Vilkin until he spoke to her, "He said, don't get any fxxking closer." She said Vilkin was holding a large revolver in one hand, and a black plastic box in the other hand. "He was pointing his gun at my chest." Zeller said she ran back to her home and dialed 911.

Man fatally shot Encinitas neighbor then threatened his girlfriend, DA says
Update: Judge Sim von Kalinowski ordered Vilkin to face both charges, murder and assault with a deadly weapon, after a hearing on September 23 2013. This means the judge found sufficient evidence to order the matter to proceed to trial.

Murder suspect in custody three years with no evidence presented yet
David Leroy Lucero had mental competency hearings in August and September of 2013. Another competency hearing has been set for late October. This young man has been held in custody for more than 3 years without hearing any evidence against him. I have never even seen Lucero brought into a courtroom, according to his high-priced defense attorney (hired by the wealthy family of the deceased woman), Lucero is not even fit to be brought into a public setting. This is very concerning.

Wife of ranch manager is suspected of stealing items
Shelley Thorpe pleaded guilty to one count of possession of stolen property, on August 9, 2013. In the deal, five other felonies will be dismissed. On the plea form, Thorpe stated that she "did unlawfully receive, conceal, or withhold property of another which had been stolen – knowingly." She expects to get 365 days custody on her day of sentencing, September 24, 2013.

Cathedral Glen, Angeles Glen, Pointer Glen in Escondido – all hit in burglaries
Thank goodness Escondido police responded promptly to the emergency. Fondly, Eva http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2013/s…— September 26, 2013 7:29 a.m.
Prior stated that the former "victim" has concentrated on her schoolwork and graduated “top of her class, and is studying to be a doctor at USD.” “Justice was served in this case,” the prosecutor said. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2013/s…— September 24, 2013 9:58 a.m.
The judge commented, "The argument was one-sided..." http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2013/s…— September 24, 2013 4:20 a.m.
Then Upton walked down the pathway towards Vilkin, where he soon died. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2013/s…— September 24, 2013 3:52 a.m.
"He was pointing his gun at my chest." Zeller said she ran back to her home and dialed 911. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2013/s…— September 24, 2013 3:31 a.m.

This is very concerning. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2013/s…— September 15, 2013 8:42 a.m.
