Escondido man guilty of double-murder for shooting pregnant girlfriend
Ruben Anthony Cepeda was sentenced to 40 years prison this morning, October 25, 2013. He will be eligible for parole after 38 years and six months in State prison, according to the prosecutor, Keith Watanabe. “Leniency is in the eye of the beholder,” said the Honorable Judge Harry Elias. He spoke to both supporters of the defendant and family of the woman who was killed, in court today. The father of the deceased, Jose Rodriguez, spoke to the judge before sentencing. The tall man leaned on a podium and wiped his eyes while he described how the tragedy affected his family. “I know there is a God who will heal me,” he said. “We are trying to find peace.” Mister Rodriguez concluded by wondering aloud if the judge had a daughter, “and I hope there will be justice.” Ruben Cepeda took opportunity today to apologize to the family of the victim, and said the shooting was an accident. And he said, “I do think about this everyday, and I dream about it too.” Before sentence was declared, defense attorney Jim Weintre asked the judge to “modify” the jury’s verdict from second-degree murder to involuntary manslaughter, but the judge declined. “I don’t believe the jury was confused,” Judge Elias said. He declared it was not “appropriate” for him to “arbitrarily” change the jury’s verdict. Marianne Barrajas, the defendant’s mother, told the judge that the shooting was “not a malicious act” and begged the judge to “have some leniency.” Ms. Barrajas said “I had Ruben at a young age, I think I was fifteen” and she wanted to share some blame for his “juvenile troubles.” (Prosecutor Watanabe presented evidence that Ruben Cepeda had extensive criminal history as a juvenile, with multiple violent offenses, including robbery.) Ruben Cepeda’s sister and aunt and grandmother also requested leniency. Grandma Sanders said “this was just a tragic accident” and “the damage is done” and “I wish that time served would be the end of it.” Judge Elias noted that Cepeda has 502 days “custody credit” as of today, October 25, 2013.

Jury: Oceanside man who stabbed mom was insane
After the jury verdict was announced, prosecutor Patricia Lavermicocca made comment: "It is a very tragic case where the defendant killed his mother. The jury found the defendant guilty of first degree murder and also found him insane. We are gratified that we have a transparent record of all the circumstances for the purpose of protecting public safety."

Former bank employee denies grand theft charge
Defendant Shaun Patrick Flanagan, 35, admitted stealing when he was in court yesterday, October 8, 2013. Flanagan admitted two felonies, grand theft and theft from an elder, in exchange for dismissal of two other felonies, according to prosecutor Ryan Saunders. “He agreed to pay $67,210 in restitution to Wells Fargo Bank,” the deputy district attorney stated. And, “He will be required to perform 200 hours of volunteer work service.” Formal sentencing is set for December 10, in San Diego’s North County Superior Courthouse. Currently Flanagan remains at liberty.

Escondido man gets 45-years-to-Life for fatal DUI
Prosecutor Laurie Hauf got special recognition for her work on this case, by the San Diego County DA's office and the Board of Supervisors. The District Attorney's office released a statement this morning, October 9 2013, saying that prosecutor Hauf's "outstanding contributions to public safety" were recognized by the county board at a meeting yesterday. Bonnie Dumanis also remarked on Laurie Hauf's "dedication." There were seven other deputy district attorneys who also received special "proclamations" at the Tuesday board meeting.

Paul Pfingst is accused of secreting evidence
Julie Elizabeth Harper, 40, was able to post $2 million bail in mid-September 2013. She has been at liberty for some weeks, fitted with an "ankle bracelet" that is monitored by the bond company that posted her bail, according to well-placed sources. During the hearing October 2, the judge modified the conditions of Julie Harper's release, allowing her to travel to Orange and Los Angeles Counties, in order to "assist in her defense." Certain family members of the deceased man, Jason Harper, reportedly reside in those areas and it was stated in court that they are fearful of the accused woman. Julie Harper denies all charges.

Fake hitman testified against California rock singer
The wife of Timothy Lambesis filed a civil suit against her husband last month, asking one million dollars for “emotional distress” and another million for “punitive damages.” Her attorney, Randall Winet, also requested unspecified attorney’s fees and $100,000 in current and future “medical expenses.” Paperwork for this lawsuit was filed August 2, 2013, and the case was assigned to Honorable Judge Timothy Casserly, in San Diego’s North County Superior Courthouse. The next court date is scheduled for April 11, 2014. It is unclear if the Lambesis divorce has been finalized. The last hearing for the divorce case of Meggan vs. Timothy Lambesis was mysteriously moved from the north county courthouse to the downtown courthouse, on September 25, 2013.

Christopher Selena accused of murder in Escondido townhouse
Trial began one week ago for Christopher James Selena, who is accused of murder. The 42-year-old defendant heard Shaquita testify again, during the first two days of trial. The defendant might take the witness stand himself, the end of this week or perhaps Monday October 7. The jury of 8 women and 4 men is expected to get the case to deliberate immediately thereafter. Honorable Judge Kathleen Lewis presides in San Diego's North County Superior Courthouse in Vista, California.

Grandma Sanders said “this was just a tragic accident” and “the damage is done” and “I wish that time served would be the end of it.” Judge Elias noted that Cepeda has 502 days “custody credit” as of today, October 25, 2013. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2013/o…— October 25, 2013 2:43 p.m.

Julie Harper denies all charges. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2013/o…— October 3, 2013 6:26 a.m.
Timothy Lambesis was mysteriously moved from the north county courthouse to the downtown courthouse, on September 25, 2013.— September 30, 2013 5:54 p.m.
