Carlsbad bookkeeper accused of embezzlement
Prosecutor Anna Winn later released a statement: "I appreciate that the defendant pled guilty and agreed to re-pay her former employer the amount she stole from him. The victims are satisfied with our justice system." This deputy district attorney specializes in financial crime.

Former DA Pfingst and accused murderer Julie Harper
A reader made comment on this article (elsewhere), to dispute whether or not Jason Harper was *shot in the back*. That person, identified as **Name Withheld**, claimed that Jason Harper was “shot in the side,” and quoted part of one sentence from the preliminary hearing transcript. Anyone who has access to the full transcript of the two-day hearing can go to the last pages, and find where Honorable Judge Robert Kearney stated, on the record, that Jason Harper was *shot from behind* – and that his wife was the only other person in the room at the time.

Carlsbad bookkeeper accused of embezzlement
Deborah Gore, 59, was sentenced to 28 months prison today, December 18, 2013. The Honorable Judge K. Michael Kirkman noted that Gore has 516 days custody credit, so far. The judge ordered the admitted thief to pay $166,947 in restitution; but after the hearing, in the courthouse hallway, prosecutor Anna Winn sounded skeptical about the felon actually repaying that amount. "I doubt it," she said.

Surfer via OKCupid wanted to meet in Carlsbad motel parking lot
"This was a serious case in which the victim was extremely brave," prosecutor Laurie Hauf commented after the jury verdict was declared, the morning of December 18, 2013. "The jury was very diligent in coming to their decision." It took more hours to select the jury for this case, than hours spent presenting evidence to the jury. Now convicted of assault with intent to commit rape, Matthew Nathan Terrell is scheduled to be sentenced the morning of February 7, 2014, by the Honorable Judge Sim von Kalinowski.

Surfer via OKCupid wanted to meet in Carlsbad motel parking lot
After deliberating less than 3 hours, the jury unanimously declared Terrell guilty of both charges: assault with intent to commit rape and false imprisonment. Honorable Judge Sim von Kalinowski immediately ordered Terrell to be taken into custody, and the felon is now held without bail until his sentencing in February 2014. Testimony and presentation of evidence during trial lasted a little more than one day, with a surprise move by defense to present no evidence at all. Matthew Nathan Terrell chose not to take the witness box in his own defense. Victim Emily was in the witness box less than two hours, she was mostly composed during her devastating testimony.

Surfer via OKCupid wanted to meet in Carlsbad motel parking lot
Trial began today for Matthew Nathan Terrell. A jury of 6 men and 6 women is hearing evidence in San Diego's North County Superior Courthouse. The alleged victim, Emily, will continue her testimony from the witness box after the lunch break today, December 16, 2013. The jury might get the case to deliberate by the end of this week.

Former bank employee denies grand theft charge
Shaun Patrick Flanagan has escaped any days in custody, after he admitted grand theft from Wells Fargo bank. On Friday, December 13, 2013, Flanagan was sentenced to three years formal probation by the Honorable Judge David Berry. Flanagan was also ordered to perform 200 hours of volunteer work, and he “agreed to pay $67,210 in restitution to Wells Fargo,” according to prosecutor Ryan Saunders. “And (he was) ordered to stay out of all Wells Fargo banks.”

Defendant who admitted stabbing is declared guilty of second degree murder
Christopher James Selena was sentenced to 17-years-to-Life today, December 12, 2013. Honorable Judge Kathleen Lewis remarked that the stabbing was "unprovoked" and that the victim was "innocent" and "weaponless." Judge Lewis reviewed Selena's prior criminal history and declared him to be "a violent man" and "a documented gang member." The convicted murderer spoke to the judge, saying her "perception of me is totally wrong and not fair." Selena claimed sympathy for the man that he killed, telling the court: "Fernando was not my enemy" and "Fernando and I were pawns." The father of the murder victim spoke to the judge, asking her for the maximum sentence; he said of the convicted man: "If he is allowed out, he is going to hurt more people." The judge noticed that Selena has 587 days "custody credit" so far.

Convicted child abuser skipped before the verdict
Joseph McCarron's body was found last Sunday, November 30, according to a press release issued late today, December 3, 2013. The Sheriff’s Fugitive Task Force began searching for the convicted abuser on November 14, a spokesperson for the San Diego County DA’s office stated. “The defendant’s body was found in the wooded area behind a park in Carlsbad and was recovered by the Carlsbad Police Department. The San Diego county Medical Examiner positively identified the body as that of the defendant,” according to the press release. “The Medical Examiner has not released the official cause of death.”

Sentencing delayed for man convicted of child abuse
“I will never forgive myself for trusting you,” the mother of the abuse victim wept when she stood in court and spoke to the man convicted of raping her 9-year-old daughter. The father of the little girl also spoke before sentencing today, he said his training with the Marines helped him to control his “natural instinct to throttle” the abuser, the father instead waited for the justice system to work. Judge Blaine Bowman remarked on the “rare case” in which the perpetrator used his own cell phone to capture video of himself abusing the child, and then that video became part of the “overwhelming evidence” presented at trial. The judge further spoke of the “cruelty and callousness” of Daniel Hood’s “despicable acts” before he declared, “I’m going to impose the maximum.” It was June 3, 2013 when a jury declared Hood guilty of eleven felony counts of child abuse. On December 2, 2013, a San Diego Superior Court judge sentenced Hood to 116 years to Life in prison. A clerk said that 43-year-old Hood has 727 days custody credit, so far.

Carlsbad bookkeeper accused of embezzlement
Prosecutor Anna Winn later released a statement: "I appreciate that the defendant pled guilty and agreed to re-pay her former employer the amount she stole from him. The victims are satisfied with our justice system." This deputy district attorney specializes in financial crime. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2013/d…— December 20, 2013 2:56 a.m.
Anyone who has access to the full transcript of the two-day hearing can go to the last pages, and find where Honorable Judge Robert Kearney stated, on the record, that Jason Harper was *shot from behind* – and that his wife was the only other person in the room at the time. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2013/d… http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2013/d…— December 20, 2013 2:17 a.m.
"I doubt it," she said. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2013/d…— December 18, 2013 8:02 p.m.
Now convicted of assault with intent to commit rape, Matthew Nathan Terrell is scheduled to be sentenced the morning of February 7, 2014, by the Honorable Judge Sim von Kalinowski. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2013/d…— December 18, 2013 12:17 p.m.

Victim Emily was in the witness box less than two hours, she was mostly composed during her devastating testimony. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2013/d…— December 18, 2013 11:44 a.m.

Trial began today for Matthew Nathan Terrell. A jury of 6 men and 6 women is hearing evidence in San Diego's North County Superior Courthouse. The alleged victim, Emily, will continue her testimony from the witness box after the lunch break today, December 16, 2013. The jury might get the case to deliberate by the end of this week. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2013/d…— December 16, 2013 1:18 p.m.
“And (he was) ordered to stay out of all Wells Fargo banks.”— December 16, 2013 8:15 a.m.
Defendant who admitted stabbing is declared guilty of second degree murder
Christopher James Selena was sentenced to 17-years-to-Life today, December 12, 2013. Honorable Judge Kathleen Lewis remarked that the stabbing was "unprovoked" and that the victim was "innocent" and "weaponless." Judge Lewis reviewed Selena's prior criminal history and declared him to be "a violent man" and "a documented gang member." The convicted murderer spoke to the judge, saying her "perception of me is totally wrong and not fair." Selena claimed sympathy for the man that he killed, telling the court: "Fernando was not my enemy" and "Fernando and I were pawns." The father of the murder victim spoke to the judge, asking her for the maximum sentence; he said of the convicted man: "If he is allowed out, he is going to hurt more people." The judge noticed that Selena has 587 days "custody credit" so far. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2013/d…— December 12, 2013 12:59 p.m.
“The Medical Examiner has not released the official cause of death.” http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2013/d…— December 3, 2013 4:42 p.m.
A clerk said that 43-year-old Hood has 727 days custody credit, so far. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2013/d…— December 2, 2013 2:20 p.m.
