Stabbing outside Carrows Restaurant in Oceanside
Bruce Eric Hunt, 54, was sentenced to 24-years-to-life in San Diego’s North County Superior courthouse this morning, May 15, 2015. In a plea deal, Hunt admitted second-degree murder by use of knife, plus one count of attempted murder by use of knife; the prison sentence was agreed upon in advance. There were no victim impact statements made to the judge on behalf of the stabbing victim before sentencing, according to prosecutor Christine Ryan.

No plea deal — 12 years in the clink
“I’ll let you sentence me between the seven and 12 years,” the admitted thief, defendant Dennis Eugene Long, 65, told the judge today, May 12 2015. Two weeks ago, Honorable Judge Michael Popkins gave Long some time to consult with his defense attorney, because the defendant had the option to withdraw his plea after the judge broke the plea deal to increase the sentence by five years. However, defense attorney Laura Copsey wanted more time to file a statement "in mitigation," and defendant Long reportedly wants to give a statement to a probation officer. So the matter was delayed another month. Everybody is expected back in San Diego's North County Superior Courthouse on June 12, 2015, before the same judge, to hear the final sentence.

Hey, Doshay, they got your DNA
At a very brief hearing this morning, which lasted perhaps two minutes, defendant Jack Doshay appeared in order to waive his right to speedy justice. His next court hearing was set for June 24, 2015. Prosecutor Ryan Saunders took the opportunity to hand over certain items of “discovery” to defense attorney Paul Pfingst, these items were described as DVDs of interviews, plus paperwork. The deputy district attorney also stated on the record that he had not yet received results from a computer forensics lab, nor additional DNA testing from another lab.

John Doe Number One goes after Jeffrey Barton
Although defense attorney Daniel Greene confirmed that he has been working on this case for a year, today he told a judge, “We are just not ready to proceed.” Greene asked that the jury trial for defendant Jeffry Barton be delayed four months, from May until September. Honorable judge Harry Elias allowed Greene to choose his preferred trial date, and he chose September 24. “That date is fixed,” the judge informed attorneys for both sides. “We’re not going beyond that date.” Trial is expected to last 5 or 6 weeks, into early November. Attorneys will be back in court June 15 to discuss pre-trial motions and design the questionnaire that will be given to potential jurors.

Who did it then, Frank?
On April 2, 2015, Frank Brauns was sentenced to 14 years prison for spousal injury and false imprisonment by violence. He had 221 days custody credits so far, on that date. He is appealing his case. The victim spoke to Judge Robert Whitney before sentencing, she said they had been married about one year before the attack. The victim also spoke to a probation officer who prepared a report found in the court file. The battered wife said that she hopes her children will be adults by the time the defendant is released from prison. She believed that he was trying to take her life, and would have been comfortable with Frank Brauns getting a life sentence. “I feel this man is still denying that he did anything whatsoever,” she reportedly said. “I don’t want my son to ever be allowed to see him.”

Does that mean there's no herbal Viagra?
Dennis Eugene Long, 65, is scheduled to be sentenced at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow April 28 2015, in department 6 of San Diego's North County Superior Courthouse in Vista, California. Some of his fraud victims are expected to speak to the judge.

Mine shafted
At a hearing this morning, April 22, 2015, defense attorney David Kaloyanides made a preemptory challenge to the judge who is handling this case, Honorable Rodney Cortez. The defense attorney said this was “procedural” and “nothing personal” regarding the particular judge. Since there are only two criminal-court judges seated in the Joshua Tree courthouse, the case would presumably be moved into the only other courtroom. However, this morning judge Cortez dismissed defense’s action as not timely filed. The defense attorney has stated that he will pursue his request by writ.

Hey, Doshay, they got your DNA
One day after the bail hearing, Doshay’s passport was surrendered and is now stored in the criminal vault of the business office in San Diego’s North County Superior Courthouse. The next day, on April 11, a bond guaranteeing $2.5 million bail was secured from ALL HOURS BAIL BONDS, after a premium of $200,000 was paid; this according to documents in the criminal file for Jack Henry Doshay.

Former cop to go on trial again
Trial has been delayed again for Katherine Ann Heinzel, 54, after a hearing on Friday, April 17, 2015. Heinzel appears to have changed attorneys again, and is now represented by William Nimmo. Trial for Heinzel had been set to start in two weeks, but is now delayed until October. The defendant remains at liberty on bond while awaiting trial.

There were no victim impact statements made to the judge on behalf of the stabbing victim before sentencing, according to prosecutor Christine Ryan. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2015/m…— May 15, 2015 2:06 p.m.
Everybody is expected back in San Diego's North County Superior Courthouse on June 12, 2015, before the same judge, to hear the final sentence. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2015/m…— May 12, 2015 3:49 p.m.
The deputy district attorney also stated on the record that he had not yet received results from a computer forensics lab, nor additional DNA testing from another lab. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2015/m… http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2015/m…— May 6, 2015 10:58 a.m.
Attorneys will be back in court June 15 to discuss pre-trial motions and design the questionnaire that will be given to potential jurors. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2015/m… http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2015/m…— May 4, 2015 4:10 p.m.
“I don’t want my son to ever be allowed to see him.”— April 29, 2015 10:09 a.m.
Does that mean there's no herbal Viagra?
Dennis Eugene Long, 65, is scheduled to be sentenced at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow April 28 2015, in department 6 of San Diego's North County Superior Courthouse in Vista, California. Some of his fraud victims are expected to speak to the judge.— April 27, 2015 1:05 p.m.

The defense attorney has stated that he will pursue his request by writ. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2015/a…— April 22, 2015 2 p.m.
Hey, Doshay, they got your DNA
One day after the bail hearing, Doshay’s passport was surrendered and is now stored in the criminal vault of the business office in San Diego’s North County Superior Courthouse. The next day, on April 11, a bond guaranteeing $2.5 million bail was secured from ALL HOURS BAIL BONDS, after a premium of $200,000 was paid; this according to documents in the criminal file for Jack Henry Doshay. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2015/a…— April 21, 2015 6:52 p.m.
The defendant remains at liberty on bond while awaiting trial. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2015/a…— April 20, 2015 7:44 a.m.
