The opposite of neighborly in Fallbrook
If you like to follow this case, Karen Marie, the next hearing for Alyce Copeland is Monday, February 8, in department 5 of San Diego's North County Superior Courthouse in Vista. On that day, the judge will confirm the current trial date of March 21, 2016, or a new trial date will be set.

Mr. or Dr. Young?
After hearing evidence for two months, the jury went into deliberations on Thursday, January 21, 2016. The following Tuesday, the judge got a note from a juror stating they were deadlocked. The judge sent the jury home that day, and later met with attorneys in chambers. Late Wednesday, January 27, jurors were "ordered back into deliberations" according to the court clerk. Since then, jurors have been sending notes out to the judge, and asking for read-back of trial testimony from the court reporter. One week after they began deliberating, as of late Thursday, January 28, the jury continues working toward unanimous verdicts.

Mr. or Dr. Young?
The trial went on for more than two months. The jury went into deliberations yesterday morning, Thursday, January 21, 2016.

Monstrous monsters sent to jail forever
At her sentencing hearing January 8, 2016, Jessica Lynn Lopez was sentenced to two Life terms in prison, without possibility of parole, for her part in the kidnap and torture and murder. The attorney for Jessica Lynn Lopez had previously asked the judge to delay sentencing so she could file motions asking for a new trial. Attorney Sloan Ostbye suggested that the court made a mistake by allowing the attorney for co-defendant Louis Ray Perez to produce a certain mental health expert as witness; this expert gave testimony during trial last September, and gave expert opinion regarding Jessica Lynn Lopez. Ostbye complained of that expert, “He never interviewed my client” and she asserted that he influenced the jury to believe that Lopez was mentally ill and “could have committed this heinous act.” Before the judge announced sentence, he heard victim impact statements from the brother and parents of the murdered woman. Brittany Killgore’s younger brother, who was 5 years old at the time of her death, told the court: “The people who hurt Brittany are bad and I hope they stay in prison forever.” Robert Scott Lopez, who is the father of convicted murderer Jessica Lynn Lopez, submitted a written “impact statement,” this was read in court by attorney Ostbye. Mr. Lopez first expressed “deepest condolences” to the family of Brittany Killgore and stated “I hope you find peace somehow, with the help of the Lord.” He told the court that Jessica Lopez was the eldest of his four daughters and “She was a wonderful baby.” In the statement, which took about 8 minutes to read, Mr. Lopez recalled moments of Jessica’s childhood, and declared that she “did not get into tobacco or drugs or sex” the way other young people did. The man wanted the court to know that his children went to Sunday school to learn about God. He expressed pride that his eldest daughter went to school to become a Certified Nursing Assistant in 2011, and he stated that he and his own father both hoped to have Jessica Lopez with them, to care for them, as they grew older. Mr. Lopez declared: “To see Jessica in her current predicament makes me very sad.” In the last pages of his remarks the father repeatedly asserted that his family was her “one true, unconditional family.” While her attorney was reading the pages in court, Jessica Lopez sat next to her and watched attentively. Near the end of the statement Lopez became tearful and tried to wipe her eyes with her shackled hands. Lopez was dressed in green jail clothing, with her ankles chained together and her hands cuffed to the chain around her waist, at her sides. After San Diego Superior Court judge K. Michael Kirkman solemnly announced the two life sentences for Jessica Lopez, a probation officer informed him that Lopez has been in custody 1362 days so far.

Former cop to go on trial again
Another trial delay for Katherine Ann Heinzel was granted last Friday, on January 8 2016. Her current trial date is now set for May 2 2016. The fatal crash happened more than four years ago, on November 19, 2011. Heinzel has been out on bond, at liberty, since October of 2014. It appears that the former Orange County police officer is still represented by attorney William Nimmo.

Pain meds and another jail mattress denied
After more delays, sentencing for Julie Harper is currently set for Friday morning, January 15, 2016, at 9 a.m. before the same judge who heard both trials. Hon. judge Bowman will first listen to victim impact statements -- probably from families of both the victim Jason Harper and the shooter Julie Harper. Prosecutor Keith Watanabe has said he expects Julie will get 40 years in State prison.

Doshay was out for Labor Day
Jack Doshay, who recently turned 23, was in court this morning December 14, 2015. His attorney made future court dates in which he is expected to ask the judge to seal the grand jury transcripts, and ultimately to dismiss the case against Doshay. Those hearings are set for February and March, respectively, and will be before the Honorable judge K. Michael Kirkman. A date for a jury trial is currently set for summer of 2016, in July.

7 men lie about sexual abuse?
The judge decided that Jeffrey Barton must face the remaining 16 felony charges of child abuse, at the end of a hearing late today, November 12, 2015. Prosecutor Tracy Prior said, "Our office fought for the case to remain based on the amount of victims and the compelling nature of their testimony." The prosecutor said that the 7 alleged victims who testified, who are now adult men, were from three different boarding schools, and did not know each other, and had no motivation to lie. Judge Harry Elias ordered the defendant to continue to be held in custody, in lieu of $1 million bail. "This defendant is a danger to our community in that his pattern of abuse has spanned three decades and so many different communities," the prosecutor said. "We argued for bail to remain extremely high due to the seriousness of the multiple crimes and the danger to the public should he be out of jail." The prosecutor also repeated her praise of the alleged victims, citing their courage to appear in the public forum. "We will continue to fight for justice in this case," said Pryor.

The opposite of neighborly in Fallbrook
If you like to follow this case, Karen Marie, the next hearing for Alyce Copeland is Monday, February 8, in department 5 of San Diego's North County Superior Courthouse in Vista. On that day, the judge will confirm the current trial date of March 21, 2016, or a new trial date will be set.— January 31, 2016 8:04 a.m.
Mr. or Dr.
One week after they began deliberating, as of late Thursday, January 28, the jury continues working toward unanimous verdicts.— January 28, 2016 10:53 p.m.
Mr. or Dr. Young?
The trial went on for more than two months. The jury went into deliberations yesterday morning, Thursday, January 21, 2016.— January 22, 2016 12:30 p.m.
Michael Kirkman solemnly announced the two life sentences for Jessica Lopez, a probation officer informed him that Lopez has been in custody 1362 days so far. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2016/j…— January 15, 2016 6:27 a.m.
It appears that the former Orange County police officer is still represented by attorney William Nimmo. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2016/j…— January 11, 2016 9:22 a.m.
Prosecutor Keith Watanabe has said he expects Julie will get 40 years in State prison. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2016/j…— January 11, 2016 9:04 a.m.

A date for a jury trial is currently set for summer of 2016, in July. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2015/d…— December 14, 2015 1:54 p.m.
"We will continue to fight for justice in this case," said Pryor. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2015/n…— November 12, 2015 5:10 p.m.
