Oceanside grandma comes home from San Felipe, gets beat up and tortured
Dion Kavis Knight, 23, admitted attempted-murder in a plea deal June 16, 2021. Knight appeared in San Diego Superior court remotely, by video monitor from the Vista jail. “That’s a Super Strike under California law, and current Three Strikes law,” Honorable judge Michael Washington told the defendant. That means Knight will get increased punishment on any future felonies he might commit, the judge said today. He also admitted six other felonies, and personally inflicting great bodily injury, on 67-yr-old Cindy, an Oceanside housewife. The listed counts or charges Knight admitted were: 2, attempted murder inflicting great bodily injury 5, assault knee on chest 6, assault hands on her throat 7, assault punch to the nose 8, assault punch to the mouth 9, assault squeezed her torso with his legs 10, assault banged her head on the floor 11, commercial burglary with intent to assault In the deal, Knight admitted second-degree burglary. He did not admit first-degree burglary, he did not admit residential burglary. He did not admit entering the Oceanside home of Cindy, where he attacked her, on May 9, 2018. He also admitted two prior felonies, two car thefts, one in 2016 San Diego County, and one in 2017 in Los Angeles. In the deal, three charges were dismissed: torture and robbery and residential burglary. He is set to be sentenced before the same judge who took the plea next month, on Thursday, July 15, 2021. The victim, 67-year-old Cindy, is expected to speak to the court before sentencing. Dion Kavis Knight expects to get 18 years plus 8 months in a California prison. Prosecutor David Uyar agreed to the deal, with defense attorney Wil Rumble.

Murder suspects hop fence near Carlsbad lagoon – updated 12-6-21
At a hearing Thursday, June 10, 2021, it was revealed that Nicole Rooney was no longer part of the prosecution team. Deputy District Attorney Bill Mitchell said that April 23 “was her last day” working for the District Attorney’s office. Mitchell declined to elaborate when approached later with questions. Honorable judge Robert J. Kearney is now hearing this death penalty case, and he will next hear from attorneys on July 30. It has not yet been decided if there might be two different trials, or one trial with two juries, or one trial with one jury, for this two-defendant case. The expected trial date of September 2 was set aside, and a new date to begin jury selection was chosen, January 31, 2022. Prosecutor Bill Mitchell said he expected he could present all his evidence in one week. However, defense attorney Dan Segura predicted the trial could last “months” because there will be a guilt phase, and then possibly a sentencing phase to decide on the death penalty or not. Defendant Malissa James made statements to Carlsbad police officers who were wearing bodycams when she was arrested, and she later made statements during a police interview, and she apparently made incriminating statements while speaking with her brother through a video-chat system in jail, according to attorneys. Her defense attorney Dan Segura is expected to make efforts to supress this evidence. After today’s hearing was over, Ian Bushee was escorted out of the room by a deputy, and he met eyes with his former girlfriend while she was still seated at her defense table near the exit door. She quickly called out, “I love you!” But Ian Bushee was not able to respond before he went through the door.

A father's blood in Rancho Santa Fe
At the hearing this morning, defendant Leighton Dorey seemed cheerful and laughed when the judge corrected him, explaining that “argument” was for closing and the opening “statement” is intended to be an outline of the case. Dorey continues to act as his own attorney, and the trial date of August 25 was confirmed today.

A father's blood in Rancho Santa Fe
Almost exactly four years from his arrest, Leighton Dorey IV is due in court tomorrow, June 1, 2021. He is now acting as his own attorney, preparing for his second murder trial in San Diego’s North County Superior courthouse in Vista, California. (His first trial ended with a hung jury, it was 11 to 1 favoring a guilty verdict.) Dorey pleads not-guilty to the accusation that he murdered his father. On Tuesday, the pro-per defendant is expected to speak to Honorable judge Carlos Armour about the status of his defense case, and whether Dorey believes he has received all “discovery” from the prosecutor. You can hear this matter live only, the audio is streamed live on YouTube, no visual, it will not be saved online. Listed times for these hearings are not accurate, you might be able to catch the hearing between 9 am and 12 noon on Tuesday morning, June 1, 2021. To try to hear it, click on the link below, scroll down and click on North Department 21 to get to the YouTube channel.

Middle-aged cops were alleged targets of rage
On Wednesday, May 26, 2021, defendant Roberto Ignacio Flores, now 30 years old, appeared by video monitor in San Diego’s North County superior courthouse. Flores is currently held in the George Bailey detention facility. The audio of the six-minute hearing was broadcast live on YouTube, there was no visual, and the audio is not saved online. Through his attorney, the defendant continued to object that he appeared by remote video-monitor, Flores wants to appear in person. He demanded a PC1382 motion, this asks for his case to be dismissed because he has been denied a speedy trial. “I object to the late trial date,” Flores said, “I want my constitutional rights, I demand my right to a speedy trial!” Honorable judge Carlos Armour began to sympathize with the defendant, “Mister Flores, I don’t blame you, I mean, you have been in there awhile.” The judge noted that all courts have been shutdown during the virus scare in California, and there are a huge number of cases backlogged, the judge said, “There is about another thousand people, in the same situation.” Flores repeated his past behavior, he spoke over the judge, and demanded, “Can I have that in writing?” The judge noted the defendant’s objections in the record, he said they are “preserved.” And the next court date for Roberto Flores was set for June 23, it is unclear if his new jury trial is expected to begin on that date.

Prosecutor David Uyar agreed to the deal, with defense attorney Wil Rumble.— June 16, 2021 2:42 p.m.

She quickly called out, “I love you!” But Ian Bushee was not able to respond before he went through the door. http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2021/j… http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2021/j…— June 10, 2021 4:46 p.m.

A father's blood in Rancho Santa Fe
At the hearing this morning, defendant Leighton Dorey seemed cheerful and laughed when the judge corrected him, explaining that “argument” was for closing and the opening “statement” is intended to be an outline of the case. Dorey continues to act as his own attorney, and the trial date of August 25 was confirmed today.— June 1, 2021 2:25 p.m.
“I object to the late trial date,” Flores said, “I want my constitutional rights, I demand my right to a speedy trial!” Honorable judge Carlos Armour began to sympathize with the defendant, “Mister Flores, I don’t blame you, I mean, you have been in there awhile.” The judge noted that all courts have been shutdown during the virus scare in California, and there are a huge number of cases backlogged, the judge said, “There is about another thousand people, in the same situation.” Flores repeated his past behavior, he spoke over the judge, and demanded, “Can I have that in writing?” The judge noted the defendant’s objections in the record, he said they are “preserved.” And the next court date for Roberto Flores was set for June 23, it is unclear if his new jury trial is expected to begin on that date.— May 27, 2021 10:09 a.m.
