neighborhoods/jamul -- Jamul
At intersection of Japatul Valley Rd. and Lyons Valley Rd. Took this late Nov. but it has been up for about 6 months. Anyone know who put the sign up? http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2013/d…— December 6, 2013 8:23 a.m.
Toyotas targeted in Poway
Coronado, too. See [Reader Holler page July 15.][1] Crime on 6th and A Sat. night. Went to start my 1999 Toyota pick-up Sunday morning and sounded as if I had no muffler. Catalytic converter unbolted and stolen. Guy at Cordova Garage says it is $1300+ to replace bolted-on. Welded-on is only $600. Guess which one I'm choosing? Police said I was the third stolen catalytic converter reported in Coronado today. All from Toyota Tacomas, 1997-1999; easy to unbolt those years. Repair guy said thieves can get $300 for the platinum. [1]: http://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/coronado/holle…— July 22, 2013 9:30 a.m.

neighborhoods/julian -- Julian
Now my neighbor tells me that Julian Hardware (2111 Main) is closing Aug. 1. Owned by descendants of Julian's pioneer Farmer family, but a family illness makes it too hard to keep going. The hardware store owners will rent out that part of Main street. This on top of the closing of Julian Feed (2902 Washington). A good spot for bales of hay and squirrel traps. Apparently the building is being sold. A June 17 posting on Facebook includes sardonic comment from owner on locals who shopped elsewhere.— July 12, 2013 2:26 p.m.
Going Socialist at Sobaka
Should have known this was not normal SD place when our bill came inside a copy of *Five Plays* by Chekhov. The owner pointed out a painting near the front window by Russian illustrator [Mikhail Zlatkovsky][1]. See [The Art of Incredible Mikhail Zlathovsky][2] and his [cartoon gallery][3]. Mikhail (Misha) worked as art director of the *Reader* 20 years ago. Reader senior editor [Judith Moore][4] had gotten a call from [Art Spiegelman][5], creator of *[Maus][6]*, who found Misha driving a cab in New York City. Moore hired Misha for the *Reader*. He did most of his art direction from a place in Coronado near the golf course. When he heard I gave away my Navy officer's sword to drifter, he told me his father was Soviet general in WWII and Misha would never give away the father's mementos of Stalingrad. Before he left San Diego, Misha came to my door with a present - a Navy officer sword. The owner of Sobaka asked me if I have heard from Misha. I said no. The internet has him back in Russia. In 1919, entrepreneur John D. Spreckels completed the “Impossible Railroad,” linking San Diego to the East Coast via the Southern Pacific Railroad terminal in El Centro. The 148-mile stretch of track crossed into Mexico at San Ysidro, returning stateside east of Tecate. Since 1986, the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum has offered 12-mile round-trip rides on the Golden State Limited from Campo and westbound to the border tunnel at Division. From 13,000 feet, you see Tijuana, the ocean, the Laguna Mountains, and Otay Lakes directly below. Just seconds into your minute-long free fall, you’re careening toward the ground at a deafening 120 miles-per-hour. The chute pops at 5000 feet, and you lilt back to earth for about five minutes before touching down on a grass field in the hills of Jamul. Split into separate west and east sections with three trailheads between the two, **Santa Ysabel preserve**’s 3800 acres have 18.5 miles of trail options from easy to moderate. The trails are dotted with picnic areas, boasting beautiful views of pristine chaparral, woodlands, riparian habitat and grasslands, a creek, and even cattle grazing in the meadows. The west trailhead, which opened in 2010 (the east in 2006) is only two miles from Dudley’s Bakery and Julian Pie Co. Read more in today's [special issue][1] of the Reader. You know the only thing harder to spot than a California gnat? A California gnatcatcher. Or maybe a least Bell’s vireo. No, no — a Quino checkerspot butterfly. But your best bet for spotting any or all of these is to take a stroll through the grasslands, chaparral-covered hills, and stream banks of the Otay Sweetwater Refuge, off SR-94 by the Old Steel Bridge, Rancho San Diego, 619-468- 9245 The 3.5-mile trail loop is easy on the feet and should take you only about 90 minutes. (Second item in Reader's special issue; read whole thing [here][1].) [1]: http://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/2013/jun/12/co…— June 13, 2013 8:19 p.m.
