Daveo: Agree re Pizzeria Luigi. Re knishes, I hear City Delicatessen (535 University Ave., Hillcrest, 619-295-2747), Tommy Pastrami (555 W. C Street downtown, 619-487-0800), and DZ Akin's (6930 Alvarado Road, 619-265-0218) do them, though I haven't tried them. Nearest thing, I guess, would be empanadas.

La Terrazza — Life at the Top

Ptb: Wow. Not even .01 credibility? My palate has plenty credibility to me, because I like what tastes good to me. I ain't one of these people who take a sip of vino and go "Modest little offering, a little pretentious, but not afraid to speak out for itself. Wasn't it rainy on that western slope in the spring of '09, Sybil...?" Whatever. If I don't know something, I'd rather be a fool than hide behind what the wine book says I should like. What the waiter said sounded sensible. What's wrong with chablis and pizza? Really. I'm interested. Want wine sophistication? Plenty of good wine critics out there. I don't have a lot of bread, so if I can afford it in a place like this, honestly, I'm a happy camper. To GeoffM: Price-sensitive, credentials: see above. Wine discrimination: Love your one percent attitude! To Joaquin: Whew. Thanks, buddy.

Yes, but come on, Scott, you Windy City people do get a little Spanish Inquisition when it comes to hot dogs, don't you? I thought the crema gave it a richness and mushiness that helped the whole thing go down, even without the desert pear lemonade to help...Besides, look what Chicago did to the innocent, thin-crust, way-traditional New Yawk pizza. Now relish manufacturers adding bright green dye instead of the guy chopping up real fresh mint leaves for it in front of you, I'd hit the streets with you on that one. (Though I'm sure that's a lost cause already)

Chopahn: It Means “Shepherd,” Not "Composer"

Yes, Afghanistan has always been the crossroads on the Silk Route. Picked up everything from the Greeks (Alexander the Great) to the Persians (Cyrus the Great) to the Indians, so they became super-rich, and, natch, everybody wanted a piece of them. You can't fault them for the way they've handled visitors. Not for nothing they say Afghanistan is where Empires go to die. Just ask the Brits and the Soviets. So I guess their food reflects all that incredible history.
