Yes, "passionate" is the word I keep hearing about the Gelato Vero guys. Creamy's the word for my little pot. And dreamy's the word for all those cherries. But, is gelato ice cream?

Café terraces: Bigger is better?

Well, never say never. I see the narrowing of car lanes in streets to prioritize pedestrian life is already happening in a lot of downtowns. The big push for public transportation, bikes and walking is talked about endlessly in city planning classes. Plus, with iPads set to do most of the walking and talking (!), I'm predicting freeways will be market gardens within fifty years, only used by construction and emergency crews and vacationers. We'll all live in villages again, cars will be parked at the edge. In the meantime, the first thing planners should do is set back buildings, don't let developer greed push buildings to their maxo sidewalk limit, as they (tragically) did in Little Italy's last big development burst. Because what they don't see in their short-term gain perspective is that people go to where people like to be. We're like bees, birds, porpoises. We like to gather. And we don't like being second-class citizens walking like refugees on the edge of God-almighty car corridors. It's so simple, really, at least in my simple mind. People first. I think a constitutional lawyer could argue that one pretty successfully. And I do think the zeitgeist is changing. We have seen how it could be. We don't want to go back.

This sounds a really good one. Gotta try that cucumber flavor. But the contest for Top of the Pops continues. If it wasn't 100 degrees I'd be out there searching. Think I'll wait for the cool cool cool of the evening though. Then watch out. You can tell them I'll be there (as the song goes)

Side of Judgment

Great piece, Ms. B. I've eaten there myself and very healthy and nutritious, and reasonably priced. I knew the cultish side was there, but guess I should've researched it better. Now it makes me think of Loving Hut, the vegan eatery on El Cajon Boulevard. Great vegan food, great messages promoting kinder ways to live on Mother Earth, but, turns out, part of a worldwide network of restaurants run by someone who calls herself "Supreme Master" Ching Hai. The real price for eating there? You've got to watch Supreme Master TV showing the Supreme Master herself speaking Words of Wisdom to her adoring masses on how to live. How long before she tells them how to vote? I'm sure the people running both joints are reaching out to us with love, but you can't help believing their Masters have figured (rightly) that the best way to get to people is through their stomachs.
