Barrio Logan’s new star: Cocina Doña Tina

Hi Honest: I'm definitely going to have to go back. The labels were there, but now I'm not sure how much description was on them. But different ceviches, guisados...I know Barrio Loganites have been fighting for 20-30 years to get the right sort of place for the community. Looks like they've finally got it. But really, as you say, this place needs serious eating time spent there to get a good handle on it. Our work is cut out. See you there! Oh, and Las Cuatro Milpas? You're ahead of me on the beans, tamales, tacos. My mom, bless her, was good with toast. Beyond that uh... And you're right about the grease factor. But, must say, I like the sisters, and the history, and the unchanged scene inside. They may be sitting on their laurels, but it's like entering a time machine. Kinda comforting.

Jing Si: East Village has good coffee, place to think

Hi Andy: It's definitely a calm, expensively laid-out space that kinda begs you to get creative. Like a library except you can talk, with lots of good thoughts on the walls and screens. I even got the first line of my next (okay, first) novel: "It was a dark and stormy night..." Or "It was a stark and gourmet bite..."? If I was sitting there now I'd have it. Plenty of time. They promise never to toss you out or make you buy another coffee.

Sushi Deli 2 downtown: If you could bottle their secret…

Hey, and let's not forget 99-cent Bud Lights. Wish I knew more about sushi so I could judge it properly. All I remember is those 4 great mussels with spicy mayo for $2.50 that I had back in May. Let's do a visit!

Cheapest steak in town?

I agree. This place is spectacular in the value and quality of their meat. The owner's "Big John" Haedrich, a retired champion wrestler I think who escaped from East Germany. He certainly knows his meats, and is a master sausage maker (he comes from a family of sausage makers). Haven't been there recently, but I'm pretty sure $10 will buy you a great sized steak. But for North Park what you had sounds a great deal too.

Hula for moolah in Encinitas

Thanks, Tallsharon. That was the thing that really got to me too. Kealani doesn't just do it on one big fat symbolic occasion. She's there every day for people who need to eat. It's the generosity of that beautiful Polynesian way of life she carries around with her. Let's hope it rubs off a bit.
