This is some really good stuff - I was intrigued by the coffee/IPA combo and picked up a bottle the day it hit my local shop's shelf...went back the next day for another couple bottles before they sold out.

Car hits motorcyclist on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard

Yikes, two in a week...I figured out quick that's an ugly spot when I moved south out of the war zone 5 years ago, I learned early to put on my blinker to turn onto Coronado well before I crest the hill when southbound on Sunset Cliffs, but I'm still nearly rear-ended at least once a month.

St. Patrick's weekend DUI checkpoints net two drunk drivers

mridolf - Two explanations come to mind. First, the CBS story addresses two checkpoints that I didn't - Chula Vista and San Diego, while mine addresses three in Encinitas, Poway and Lemon Grove that the other story doesn't. It would appear these other two checkpoints were much more successful, with 3,404 stops and 20 DUI arrests - this would make the checkpoint total 7,787 cars screened, 22 arrests (and there were actually several more non-DUI arrests). Second, many of the other arrests are credited to regular patrols, not checkpoints. Further, the CBS story describes the Encinitas arrests as such: "Also on Saturday, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department expanded patrols in Encinitas and arrested 19 people on suspicion of drunken driving." The Sheriff's report that I based my 19 arrest number from (I'm assuming we're both sourcing the same release in this instance) reads, in part: "In an effort to ensure the safety of the citizens of Encinitas deputies from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, Encinitas Station and Agents from Alcohol Beverage Control conducted a zero tolerance drunk in public sweep in the city of Encinitas. As a result of this detail, 19 individuals were arrested. Charges included drunk in public, possession of an open alcoholic container, urinating in public and minor in possession of an alcoholic beverage." The way I read (and reported) that information, none of the Encinitas arrests were DUI, but instead tied to other alcohol-related violations. Hope this clears up the confusion to an extent, though I don't think either story puts an absolute tally on the number of DUI arrests over the weekend.

Last year I know they carried a lot of pre-season on 1090 affiliate 1700...haven't really checked on it this year, but I assume that's no longer the case?

A roll up a gravity hill

The spot I always use to illustrate this phenomena to friends is the Mountain Springs Road exit climbing the I-8 grade westbound leaving the Imperial Valley after a desert camping trip...if someone needs a bathroom break I tell them to make sure to pee uphill.

Rancho San Diego Burrito Run

Dave doesn't want a burrito after a run - I want a shower and a few hours to enjoy the energy rush before breaking into the coma-inducing bean/rice/cheesy goodness I frequently pick up from the taco shop across the parking lot from the gym in Rancho where the treadmill beats me up in the morning. Then again, a burrito "prepared specifically for runners" is probably a lot less of a gut bomb than a burrito prepared specifically for a fat guy who's happy when he breaks the 30 minute mark on a 5K...if they do it next year I'll hit this up, but today it's time to plan a return to that treadmill I've been ignoring for the last month and a half.

Hit-and-run driver gets 2 years State prison

To my possibly outdated understanding (a family member of a former in-law was incarcerated in the early 2000s), a county jail inmate receives something like 1 1/2 days credit for every day served in jail...if that's still the case, he got his 441 credits by serving roughly 300 days in county before and during trial, and while awaiting sentencing.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission will launch Boxer's requested investigation

Well, the NRC had already delayed a restart decision until April or May - this pushes it out even further. And my suspicion is that the deeper into summer the state goes, provided there's no major power shortage that strains the grid, the more public opinion turns against restart. So far as waste storage, there's no plan for what to do with those, nor does it seem like anyone's pursuing one with what could be called a sense of urgency. New next-generation nuclear plants fueled by waste from the old ones could be a partial answer, but given the current political climate good luck getting any new reactors built.
